An nie number costs little or nothing to get! Its a question 'of' taking the form to the office in Murcia. Admin cost is probably 10 to 15 euro. What you pay over that is for the person to go to the city and hand in the form & a 5 second translation so i wouldn t fall for anything over 60 - 70 €

It's free to get your NIE yourself. You have to go in person to your local police station (policia nacional). Or if you are in the UK, you can apply for one via the embassy in London or the consulates in Manchester or Edinburgh. It depends on where you live as to which embassy/consulate you have to apply via.

Imelda is correct as I have just renewed mine. I don't know why people don't do things for themselves more in Spain it would cut out all the crooks and scankers. Do your own will at the Notary office, if the Notary speaks English it is not a problem they will do a will written in spanish and english at a cost of approx 50e each saving possible thousands of euro's in solicitors fees if the will is needed. This is the one item everybody should have in Spain whether resident or not.

thanks to everyone for all you help..... we managed to do it all ourselves in cartegena and had a grand adventure doing so...all at the cost of 32 euros each...so its worthwhile trying on your own to get the numbers...AND the chap in the police station had no english at all

all i can say is if we can do it so can anyone else....great fun xxx
