Canarys tax laws

I have been told that the Canaries are an autonomous region and have different tax laws. Therefore the now abolished wealth tax did not apply to the Canaries. Was this correct? As I paid it for several years before it was abolished on the advice of a Spanish abogado. If he advised me incorrectly then I should be able to reclaim from him the tax or at least his charges or approach his professional authority and have him denounced.
