Car rental insurance for UK visit

I have to go back to the UK about twice a year for a week or two, and each time the car rental people 'sting' me for an extra £60-£100 excess cover. Does anyone know how you get around this? Is it cheaper to go elsewhere for cover or get one's own (Spanish) insurance to cover one for holiday rental in UK? I really hate this last minute sting.

You can purchase car hire excess insurance from worldwideinsure dot com for UK or EU residents, it's approx. £2 per day or £45 for a years cover. NOT valid in your country of residence.
I have used them for a few years & had to make a claim once with no problem.
