I saw a couple of videos on YouTube about this and it looked pretty bad.

Has it all been brought under control now?

Justin

Hi Justin

They were damping down with helecopters late last night - seems that all is ok today.

It even made the news on the BBC last night.

Have only just had time to sit at my computer after a very scary night on Sunday.

We were not aware that the fire, just 1.5km from us, was raging away until a friend from Mijas Pueblo tele us (she is about 5km from us!) to say she could see a fire in our direction!

On going outside we saw the images that are on the news/photos etc. The Entrerrios mountain blazing away.

As I had experienced the Mijas fires in 2001, I at least knew to damp down everything on our plot and prepare for passports, cat and evacuation.

Thankfully we didn't need to (as the wind eventually blew it in the opposite direction), but it brought back horrid memories.

Rental clients in La Mariena had it come to within 100 metres of the property and tele us to say the garden and terraces were covered in ash and to ask for someone to go and assist.

I truly hope they catch the B*****s who were responsible for it and make them do 6 yrs straight of fire duty!

PS - As many will know the fire raged all night as the planes and helicopters cannot fly at night.  At least it was all hands to the pump come daylight.  I know they were busy virtually all day.  I also noticed the yellow helicopters going to Aluarin direction too - so guess something was up there too.

It looked horrific - we were on our way home from Malaga airport just after 9pm on Sunday night and it lit up the whole night sky!  It's amazing there weren't any fatalities.

Kudos to the firefighters who managed to get it under control.

We have friends who live at Alcores de Calahonda and they were evacuated from their apartments at 5:00am. They were terrified. My daughter and her family were staying at our place further down the hill and spent the day cleaning up ash. Scary times in Calahonda

I was in La Mairena, in the midst of the action, between 7 pm and 11 pm, at which time I decided to leave for Elviria. While it is true that the fire-fighting authorities pulled out all stops the following morning, the reaction at night was lamentable by West European standards. The evacuation, so-called, was self-driven, with very little engagement from officials. Ground-based fire-fighting was pitiful. The fire jumped across roads in many places because of lack of any fire-fighting action. This is what led to the desastrous spread in the night: lack of proper action plan, and execution, insufficient men and gear, and total disregard for prevention (e.g. undergrowth everywhere). One 'consolation' though: plenty of colourful brochures on fire presention can be had in Ojen Town Hall.

Mike - It was just the same for us in 2001 in Mijas.

No 'Civil Protection' nor Police, nor anyone to tell us to evacuate. We just had to use our common sense! (And it DID come right down to our back door and I would have been crazy to sit it out in the house!)  I moved myself to the coast. The following morning it was jumping right across the road between Fuengi and Mijas as you describe.  I even drove through it (stupid now on reflection) as I was a hloiday rep and it was my 'duty' to inform various holiday guests who were in properties in the area.

We now how our own evacuation plan and do what we think is best at the time. :)

A mate and I were hiking on Entrerrios Mountain last tuesday (a week after the main fire) and came across a tree still burning.  Its roots underground were still burning. Put it out by filling the hole with soil.
