I´m sorry to sound so disapproving, but this has all become a little too frivolous.  Don´t you people know that there is a General Election coming up soon?  British voters have now realised that Gordon has been stringing them along for far too many years and are about to string him up and leave him out to dry.....

Sue

PS I hadn´t realised that More had so many strings to her bow - More please take a bow!

If you change longitud to largo it comes up with 173,000.

Karen, the question actually was, "how long is a piece of Spanish string?"

Interestingly (or perhaps not?) if you Google the question in English (without specifying origin of said string), you'll get over 19 million hits. The answer may be among them somewhere, but the task is still somewhat daunting. Add "Spanish" to the mix and we're down to just 10.4 million possible results. Slightly disappointed that this thread only makes No.3 on the Google hit list, but it's only a day old, so with time and some careful SEO we may still make it to No.1

But what about Googling it in Spanish? Seems logical. The problem is, how do we translate it? The best approximation I've found is ¿Qué longitud tiene un trozo de cuerda? Google turns up just 85,400 results. It seems the term just isn't used in the same context. Does this mean that string simply isn't as popular in Spain as in the UK? Is this a hitherto overlooked cultural difference? By introducing Spaniards to the pleasures of debating the length of a piece of string, can we build bridges (or at least rope ladders), or is it just a barrier too far? Perhaps we could all ask as many of our Spanish aquaintances as possible the above question, and report back the results. Perhaps Justin can use them for one of his forthcoming newsletter surveys?

I think a piece of string is as long as it needs to be to do the job it is required to do.

But that is only my opinion.

Regards, Febe

Did you mean 'we've lost the thread?'

Now, that looks to be about the same sized "String" that I use to fasten the cargo net down on my truck. This is mutated string-I think it should be disqualified !

Or is it just in camouflage so it cannot be recognised and returned to the rescue centre?

Maybe we could start a new TV show called  A Piece of String in The Sun, hosted by that nice Scottish Widows lady.

It could feature a couple holding hands as they visit various bits of string in Spanish locations--they could say all the usual stuff ..."This is a nice big bit of string ...I can picture meself sitting by this bit of string with a nice glass of wine/beer/meths watching the sun go down."

The nice Scottish Widows lady could then take them to an inland location where the string's cheaper -but is a bit fluffy and needs the kinks taking out. They could agonize over buying it- but decide that the string was a bit too Spanish-and there wasn't a Tesco nearby.

At last they would be shown a shiny new ball of string (on paper only) by a local office supplies shop owner who would promise them that the string would be ready "some time" if they would just cough up a few thousand euros as a holding deposit. Spinning of the string would start just as soon as they had returned to U.K.

Several months later they would discover that everything had got knotted
