I must own up to having no interest in Spain, nor in British blue collar workers. I reside in California & Switzerland. I am on business in UK and met up with an old school chum and am staying at his home. He, in turn, has a property in Spain which accounts for his interest in this website. He was reading out postings - with hilarity - and I  joined in. Life on the Costa Fish & Chips would not be for my family.  I have little in common with the posters on this thread.

For what it's worth, I come from a family of Hong Kong traders which has always valued opacity. Hard working and successful. We try our best to minimise our tax position - as I remarked before, I earn and own nothing - my needs are taken care of by a family trust. We contribute to society at every level, although prefer to have control over where our money goes.

And that is the end of Seeto. My role in your life is over!

Thread: Claiming job seekers allowance in Spain

Entitlements come in many forms. In business one calculates gross profit and then deducts costs. Is anyone suggesting that a wealthy businessman should not deduct his legitimate costs and instead pay tax on gross profit? Or that when calculating personal tax one ought not to claim allowances? It is always so easy for some to decide how others should organise their financial affairs. They have usually not been good at organising their own, in my experience.

I speak as a simple man who has no income at all and owns no property of any kind anywhere. I do not own the paintings on my walls. Nor my kitchen utensils. I suppose I own the clothes on my back but am not sure.

I agree with Sr Lopez on this. People like Bri & wend691 are socialists who want taxpayer money to go to people "who actually need it" regardless of whether they contribute to society. In fact they don't associate money as coming from taxpayer, they think it is Government money. They like to spend other peoples money on those they perceive as "vulnerable". Unemployed single mother of six from six different fathers there is no question meetS criteria of "actually needing money". This attitude has brought Europe to its knees. I have lived uNder communism.

This fruitcake man seems to have a job in UK and contribute to society. He is quite entitled to try his luck at finding job in Spain. People who call him scrounger are arrogant and ignorant.

Tax residency is a very complex subject. Even accountants that specialise in international tax law cannot agree. Neither can tax authorities. Mine says he can argue any position.
