Helen,
Have just been in SDR for the past 2 weeks and played Roda 3 times. Great course with some tough par 3's in particular! Also heard La Serena is open (officially supposed to start in October).
San Javier society was mentioned whilst I was there and the impression given was very good. It is very established with a good membership and involvement in regional leagues etc.
Ideally we would set up our own SDR society and join in the same leagues etc. It seems that societies get a discount at all of the courses. Roda said that they offer 20% discount as a matter of course though I suppose this might be negotiable if we used Roda as a base. The problem at the moment is that the majority of SDR owners are not permanent residents so that the 'core' of golfers is limited. I would think that when the development is complete in 2 or 3 years time there will be more than enough residents and frequent visitors to run our own society. It would be helpful if we really knew how many people are interested and would join an SDR society but the only 'meeting' points in SDR at present are the community groups and the municipal bar. Perhaps when the shops start opening this will improve.
I think we should try to start some kind of interest list (perhaps each community could ask its members) but in the end we will need someone based in SDR to run with the idea. In the meantime perhaps your suggestion of San Javier g.s. is the best option.
