I totally disagree with the comment that it is ok to live in Spain if you do not have to work and can speak Spanish.  I only rent a property here in Melegis, Lecrin el Valle, Andalucia.  I decided to come and live here at the ripe old age of 67 and I have not found a problem, apart from the fact that I cannot afford to run (let alone buy) a car.  But there are buses to and from my village to surrounding villages and into the town of Durcal and Granada City.  We also have two village shops, 2 bars and 2 bakeries.  And I don't speak a lot of Spanish but am really trying to learn the language as most people here do not speak English, although there are several English people here, but the Spanish people in my village are all quite friendly and I can just about get by in the shops and bars/restaurants.  I have now lived here for almost 1 years and am still enjoying my time here.

Same here Floella.  Exactly why I have an electric underblanket on my bed which is put on for a couple of hours before I get into it!

I live in the mountanous region of Andalucia and I can tell you that it gets very cold here, especially inside my house which obviously has been built to resist the intense heat of the summer months.  I have had to buy a portable gas heater to withstand the cold in the winter and therefore I have to purchase several bottles of gas.  Also electricity is quite expensive here and in the winter months I have to have my heated underblanket on for a few hours every night.  I am living out here, renting, on my pension and so am very grateful for the wfa - would probably not manage a winter here without it!

There are a few fig trees along by the river where I live in Melegis, Lecrin el Valle, Andalucia.  Also loads of orange and lemon trees but they are not ready until at least November/December.  A lot of thes are left to drop and rot - such a waste, so I pick them whenever I can along my walks, usually with my pockets bulging!  I have two lemon trees in my garden area, an orange tree and a mandarin tree (not keen on those - too many pips and they are quite small).  Wish I had a fig tree!  Love them but, no, not good to eat too many at one time!!  Can't seem to get watercress in any of the supermarkets so I brought a pack back with me from Tesco when I last went over - full of vitamin D and I love it.

I can live over here quite reasonably on less than 1000 euros - on my pension, in fact., which does vary according to the exchange rate at the time but recently has been 840 euros or a bit less.  My rent (in Melegis, Lecrin el Valle) is now 450 euros which includes my electric, water and logs in the winter months, although I think I will still have to pay for my gas but one bottle of gas lasts me 6-7 weeks so not expensive.  The balance pays for my food, dog's and cat's food and a few sundries (wine, beer and cigarettes). However, I would not be able to afford to run a car which is a bit inconvenient at times.  Fortunately, I have good friends down in Beznar who take me to the supermarkets.  Also, I have two small shops, 2 bakers and 2 bars in my village so am not completely stuck for the necessities.
