If you are interested in purchasing property outside of your native country, I suggest you check out International Living. I first attended one of their conferences five years ago, and was able to take a property tour along the Yucatan peninsula's Caribbean coast (Playa del Carmen, Mexico to Corazol, Belize), and felt comfortable enough to put down a deposit on a beach-front home in a Belizean gated community (Orchid Bay Belize).  Since my "casita" was built, it rented it out enough to cover the HOA fees and insurance.

I've attended 4 IL conferences (2 in Las Vegas, 1 in Cancun, Mexico and 1 in Quito, Equador) and several "Chill Weekends" to check out potential properties.

Currently, I'm planning to purchase a vacation home in or near Marbella, Spain. I'd visited and knew about the beauty and culture of southern Spain, but if it weren't for International Living, I would not have been aware of the value of purchasing property in Spain. I've had a good experience with this organization. Check out their website and let me know if you have any questions. I plan to attend their "Ultimate Event" in Playa del Carmen in a few weeks and find out about other potential properties.

For me, this is a vacation/retirement plan. The attendees of the IL conferences typically are looking for investment property, vacation property, retirement property or a new life. Most attendees are from the US and Canada, but I believe anyone interested in finding that special place could benefit from attending.  Personally, my goal is to have a choice of places to escape to.

Life is good, and there are so many great places to travel to. I can't wait to spend more time in Spain.

Thanks to all for the input. The wife and I plan to buy for the first time in Spain as well. We plan to purchase an apartment near Marbella later this year. We've already looked at many suitable properties in March and plan to return in June or July to continue our search. This will be our second home outside the US, and we plan to rent it out and pay the taxes, to hopefully cover some/most of the insurance/maintenance. My concern is finding a reputable conveyance attorney and building surveyor, insured, English-speaking, licensed, etc. Any sage advice regarding our planned purchased is greatly appreciated.
