Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all your replies.  I decided to bite the bullett this time and book via carjet just to make sure I had a car - 697 Euro for 15 days plus fuel!!  May need to buy a car and leave it over - but I guess that's another set of problems.  Will post another question about that one I think!

Hi, can anyone offer any advice please?  I have an apt on Jardine 9, and am over in August.  I want to hire a car for a couple of weeks to collect and drop off at Murcia airport.  However, the cost seems to have exploded for July and August - around £600 plus fuel!  Am I going to have to pay this or can I hire locally?  Grateful for any advice.
