Ombudsman seminar: "It's our Europe: Let's get active!"

EO logoOn Tuesday, 23 April 2013 the European Ombudsman, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, is organising this event to help focus on European citizens and how they can concretely contribute to shaping the European Union, either by using the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), by turning to the European Ombudsman, or by mobilising large groups of citizens to carry out grassroots initiatives.

The Ombudsman will be joined by the following top-level EU political figures to listen to, and engage with, European citizens:

  • Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament
  • Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission
  • Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission

Further information about the event is available at:http://www.ombudsman.europa.eu/activities/calendarevent.faces/en/722/html.bookmark

During the event, European citizens will be able to tweet questions to the speakers, by using the Twitter hashtag #eyc2013eo. As many questions as possible will be displayed in the seminar room, giving the speakers an opportunity to address them.

To watch the event live, simply connect to this page at 9:30 CET on Tuesday, 23 April 2013.

The European Parliament (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/ep-live/en/other-events/) and Europe by Satellite (http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/ebs/live.cfm) will also stream the event live.

The European Ombudsman investigates complaints about maladministration in the institutions and bodies of the European Union.

If you are a citizen of a Member State of the Union or reside in a Member State, you can make a complaint to the European Ombudsman. Businesses, associations or other bodies with a registered office in the Union may also complain to the Ombudsman.

Might this be an opportunity for all those who have submitted petitions to the European Commission, or those who have had to resort to seeking a remedy via the European Court of Human Rights, to highlight their ongoing concerns re the many failures of property rights across European Member States (Keith Rule's BG petition, Ruth Genda's petitions, Suzanne Wyatt's petition, AUAN etc) ?

Could this online seminar and opportunity to submit well considered questions act as a means to highlight the failures and seek change in EU law, to provide greater consumer protection in this regard?

Are any of the major petitioners (Keith, Ruth, Suzanne, AUAN etc) following through this opportunity by submitting questions to the European Ombudsman?

Are any lawyers going to participate and submit questions to this seminar, to highlight from firsthand experience the legal aspects where failures continue to compromise their clients?
