Hi,

I had an application form from Polaris the other day for our NIE numbers, I thought that we would apply for this through our respective lawyers nearer completion time. Has anyone else received these or have any views on this?

Kind regards,

Fran.

Our lawyers recently obtained our NIE Numbers. We just sent them certain information and they obtained them for us. We too have received the Polaris offer yesterday but obviously don't need to take it up. I would advise you to get you lawyers to obtain them for you as soon as possible to save any last minute panic !

Now I'm not sure what to do now! if a bank does not require NIE to open an account why else would you need them before you complete?

Kev1 can I ask what your solicitor charged you for doing this?

cheers

dan

Hi our Spanish solicitor prepared the paperwork for us and sent it to us by email, but its not complicated to do for yourself. Then we just went to our local Spanish Consulate in our case Manchester and handed in the application forms along with the cash payment. After about a month or two they write to you with your NIE Numbers.

Doing it this way meant we didn’t have to go back to Spain just to sort this out which I am told is time consuming.

This way may be an option if you have a UK Spanish Consulate within a reasonable distance from you.

Regards

Phil & Ann

If you apply for you're NIE number in person at a Spanish Consulate it's completely free. We got ours through the post the other day from the Spanish Consulate in Brussels only 9 days after we applied for them.

Our Spanish solicitor was going to charge us €150 for getting them on our behalf, and even though Polaris World can arrange them for you for a smaller fee you still have to go into Murcia in person to collect them.

Fortunately for us we live close to Brussels so the Consulate was close by, and it only took 5 minutes to complete the application (take your passports with you to verify you're who you say you are). I think it's also possible to do it by post if you send a legally authenticated copy of your passport, but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, it's something to bear in mind if you live or work near a Spanish Consulate.

Edit to add: Sorry I see Phil and Ann have posted the same thing! Strange you had to pay for it in the UK, we didn't have to pay anything for them in Belgium.

Application for the NIE Numbers may well have been free of charge at the UK Spanish Consulate as well, but I am not sure as when we went to the Consulate we arranged other things at the same time and I can’t remember which we paid for. Our solicitor made no additional charge for preparing the papers but as I said in my last post they are not complicated to do. Our NIE Numbers arrived within 4 weeks but we where warned it may take longer.

I think one of the reasons for applying for the NIE as soon as you can is that it can take some time for them to come through. This may not happen if you go via the consulate but variously through this site I have read of people waiting for ages and then if something comes up that you need them for- then its a problem. Our fees have been part of the general fees to our Solicitor and they did all the leg work for them and it actually took a few months for them to come through from when we sent our information over.

We havent yet opened a Bank Account but when recently  talking about doing this with our agents, the first thing they asked was 'have you got your NIE numbers?' so we presumed we do need them for that but maybe other forum members can shed some light there?

JHMurcia did you pick them up yourself or did your solicitor do it on your behalf? if so did you have to give them power of attorney ?

We opened a bank account through the halifax yesterday, all we needed was for our local branch in the UK to countersign copies of our passports and to open the account with a 600€ balance. We didn't need our NIE numbers. There is a Banco Halifax Espana in Mazarron.

We opened their Xtra account where there is no minimum balance but a small yearly charge of 25€. Watch out for alot of accounts where you have to keep a minimum amount in or there will be maintenance charges. There are many pages about bank accounts on the general forum.

With the Xtra account they also provide various services one of them being a Utility registration service, wonder if they can be quicker than Polaris?

Transferring money from our English Halifax account is free but obviously they do not lose out on the exchange rate.

Hi all,

just filled out all the forms after being advised by my lawyer, he thinks Polaris are helping us with our NIE numbers because there is a large amount of clients buying from their developments, plus we shouldn't need to queue the the foreign office.

Regards,

Fran.

I've been to the Spanish Consulate in London today to apply for the NIE numbers.

It was very straight forward really and there were no charges which were a bonus.  They reckon it will take between 1 and 3 months before we receive the paperwork (this will be sent to our solicitor in Spain as you have to give an address there and not in the uk).

Saves having to go to Murcia at completion time and collecting it from the police station there.

Think the process depends on where you go. I went to the Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh to apply for mine 2 weeks ago, again no cost but they told me my number will be sent to my address in the UK within 2 months...just hope he was right!
