We are coming to con dado tomorrow and have hired a car from centauro at airport. We are both over the age of 60 and have old paper driving licenses issued in the 1970s!! We have emailed centauro reservations  but they think everyone in England have the card with paper copy types. Can anyone help thanks jill and bob

Thank you everyone who gave us v helpful advice about us using our ancient driving licenses when hiring a car with centauro just to let you know we arrived safety on Saturday we had obtained the necessary codes to enable firm to check our driving records and we had no problems at all!! Now roasting in condado and loving every minute of it jillandbob

I think you'll find paper licenses became redundant about a month ago and now only a photocard license is accepted.

Hired with Goldcar a week ago using my paper license and had no problem, can't see other companies being any different.

Ksturges, it's not the old paper licences that are withdrawn.  They remain valid.  The paper counterparts of the photo card licences have been withdrawn. They were never needed in Spain anyway.

The old style paper driving licence is valid in UK and everywhere else it Has Not been made obsolete. If in possession of said licence it will remain valid until such time as you have to change it for example change of address, renewal due to age or adding on a different class of vehicle. If you have to do this you are then required to be issued with a new photo digital licence.

the new style photo licence paper counter part which would normally be used to show points or licence restrictions has been withdrawn and Can be disposed of. The plastic photo portion will now be the only part required for UK licence, points will now be recorded on central data base.

so answer to question is old style paper licence is valid.

I wasn't aware there was a difference. Thanks for putting me right. Have a good stay, Jill and Bob. I was there last week and loved it, as usual.

We are in Spain at the moment and got a hire car through Centaura at Murcia airport using the old paper licence, no problem.

You may not have experienced any issues thus far but the proper procedure is to get a code no more than 72 hrs prior to hiring a car - either at home or abroad - and present this to the hire co.  This is now their only way of checking your driving history with the DVLA. They will start doing this at some point so as it only takes a few minutes of your time to call and get the code then I would say it's probably worth doing so.

Whilst on about Centauro can anyone confirm you have to block 950 euro on your card you booked the car with and if so how long do you have to wait to get it refunded? Heard conflicting information.

Cheers

Can't speak for Centauro specifically, but all the hire companies I've used block between 900 and 1200 euros if I don't take their insurance. Never had a problem and it's always been released within a day or so of returning the car.  Note, they don't actually take the funds, just 'reserve' them so they can take the money straight away if the car is returned damaged. It's normal practice all over the world.

Money is only held on your card, never taken off.  I hire cars several times a year and never had a problem.

Dickmanns do take the money off your card when you collect the car and then refund the deposit after you have returned the car. You can end up loosing out because some cards make a transaction charge even on the refund.

Dickmans took £780.33 off my credit card on 17th May when I picked the car up and returned £701.42 on 12th June (26 days they had my money). This means they charged me £78.91 for the fuel for a 50 litre car and they got a third of a tank back!! The exchange rate may have been slightly less.

Bandits...........there is no way the money should be taken from your card, it should just be blocked. Avoid any car hire company that debits your card instead of applying a block.

Regards,

Centauro are ROBBERS!!! They charged my account with 37 $ without any authorisation nor explaining 3 month after we returned our rented car. I dont have any information why they did it. I contacted police and respected bank organisation
aswell as my bank to block my account to prevent any further deductions from account.
