We use Goldcar - they are cheap and reliable - but the queues at the airport are always long.

I'd advise booking through doyouspain.com of travelsupermarket.com for the best prices. If flying into Alicante, avoid Goldcar. If into San Javier, get yourself a seat at the front of the aircraft as the car hire desks are in the baggage hall, so you can get to the front of the queue if you're quick.

Mike, there is no such thing as a good car hire company in Spain. Or anywhere for that matter!

Having said that, I have used DoYouSpain on a number of occasions which range from an excellent experience with Interrent in Alicante and a poor experience with Dickmanns from St Javier.

Part of this is not knowing the system. Cheaper rentals tend to be a full/empty policy where they charge you an admin fee of around 20€ for topping up the car. Some charge for a full tank on collection and will refund any fuel not used, but not on return, usually later. Others charge for fuel used on return.

You can ask for full/full but the rental price goes up.

They also try to sell you their excess insurance which is extortionate. Most hires have a circa 1000€ excess on damage. You can put up your credit card to cover the excess and take secondary (cheaper) insurance from DoYouSpain. If you intend to travel often it is worth looking for annual excess cover elsewhere.

Just be aware that the quoted price is not the final price. Accept that the full/empty policy has the admin charge and fuel costs. Always refuse the hire company's excess insurance no matter how much pressure they put on you (some do, some don't)

Forewarned is Forearmed

Good luck with your search

Hi kevinstephenz,

I had a look at Mar Menor car hire. Their cheapest car is €175 per week. I got a 9 day hire from DoYouSpain for next week for €42.15 plus €49.05 excess insurance. Even after adding in the fuel admin charge DoYouSpain still works out significantly cheaper than Mar Menor car hire.

Also, I can't see if the insurance cover is excess free. Can you tell me whether their standard insurance which comes as part of the price covers all damage?

Thanks

All the standard advice seems to be not to use the solicitor recommended by the agent. I'm not sure it's that critical, though. We used Mare Nostrum in Los Alcazares and they were very good.

We also bought via La Vida and used Abad Abogados in Los Alcazares. They were very professional, thorough and efficient and things went without problems (other than Bankia dragging their heels).

We also gave them power of attorney and they sorted out everything for us from opening bank accounts, getting our N.I.E. cards, dealing with the water and electricity companies etc as well as the dealing with all the stuff related to the actual purchase. I wouldn't say they were cheap, but not really any more expensive than the cost of a purchase in the UK.

I did some research and they are on the Foreign Office recommended list as English speaking lawyers in Murcia and also have no conflict of interest with respect to Resortalia, Bankia or La Vida.

Good luck with your purchase.

Here's my guide on golf societies etc:

Hacienda Riquelme Society. Play every Monday. Must register by 17:00 on Saturday. http://www.hrgrgolf.es/

El Valle Society. Play on Tuesday and Saturday. Meet on practice green at 12:30

Club 25. Play on Wednesday and Sunday. Tee times usually at 9:30-10:30, various courses. Must register by 16:00 on Monday for Wednesday event, and 16:00 on Friday for Sunday event.  http://club25golf.com/

Condado de Alhama Society. Play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. http://cdagolf.com/

Of them, my top recommendation is the guys at El Valle. You can find them on Facebook. They're doing earlier tee times now it's summer.

Hope that helps!

Regards.

Adrian
