Over the past few years it has been taken for granted that the first hotel will be built on Roda.  However now, I'm actually thinking that Corvera could have the best chance.  Has anyone heard / have on opinion on this?

As a purchaser on Corvera I hadn't given it a great deal of thought apart from which company in their right mind would build a hotel in this economic climate.  However with the question raised it could be possible that Corvera has the first hotel built purely going on the size of the development and as I understand a smaller hotel was planned at Corvera then at Roda.  As far as Calidona are concerned it would be a 'cheaper' development for that initial outlay.  In a way I hope to be wrong as you guys deserve a five star hotel having spent many tiimes at Roda looking at holes in the ground and thinking what could be.

Looking forward to visiting and playing Roda again this Summer as at least you have a golf course,  another six months for us.  I am now official depressed again!!

Hi Celtic - in the absence of any real commitment from Calidona, it strikes me that there is a blank canvas at both resorts.  At the moment I wouldn't be surprised if Corvera sees the first hotel - albeit still in a few years time!

The new sports facilities at Roda look really good but are I think overlooking the 7th tee and situated in the place where I thought the hotel was going to be.  The new management of the Clubhouse restaurant and beach club seem to be doing well and will have invested a lot of time and effort into it - it might be interesting to know how long their tenancy agreement is.  It was the De Vere group that was meant to be running these.

In terms of Corvera, there will eventually be a new international airport located a very short distance away and I doubt that there will be any other hotel within the vicinity.  Whereas Roda faces competion from La Manga which at present is struggling financially.  Corvera is also the newer resort which may be an attraction to De Vere.  Icspain also makes an excellent point in terms of the fact that the hotel on Corvera was intended to be smaller and so the finance needed to build from Calidona would be less.  It also means that De Vere may take less of a risk in terms of percentage occupancy rates and running costs by having a fewer, more exclusive rooms.

Whatever happens there will be a lag of about 2 years from start to finish.

Unfortunately it is the case that we all have to wait another 6 months until any decision (and no guarantee of this) is made.

Most if not all of the previous comments are just pure speculation

Devere are still supervising the new management of the Club House/ Beach Club.

The contract between Calidona and Devere remains in place for the hotel at Roda

The decision on when construction will begin will be made at the end of 2009

End of speculation

I think you will find the original question was asking for opinions and not facts.  Just a fact.

All I know is that I'm "fact" off with the delays!

I guess I agree with you Sugarmummy, there is no point in debate or thought.  Perhaps the only way to approach this is by forgetting about it in the meantime and hope that Calidona at least keep their word next time around.

Hi,

I may be wrong, Sugarmummy, but I think the decision regarding the hotel in Roda is due to be taken at the end of 2010, not 2009.

Given the level of procrastination and delays in all things Roda, I think that it is indeed speculation to think that a decision about "when to build the hotel" will be made at all. There has been no commitment by either Roda or DeVere (again correct me if I am wrong) to set a date when they get back together at the end of 2010. Indeed they may just decide to get back around the table again at the end of 2011, 2012 or whenever.

I sincerely hope this is not the case and that they get the hotel underway sooner rather than later.

Regards Steven

This is the official statement from the Calidona website...........................

The Directors of Calidona and De Vere Hotels have reached an agreement to delay until 31st December 2009 the decision  of commencement works to construct the hotel at Roda Golf & Beach Resort which is to be managed by De Vere

The delays by the administrative authorities  in  granting  licence  authorisations  have prevented the commencement of works until this time when we find ourselves in the context of International economic & financial  uncertainty  which  creates  problems  for  any decisions of investment and in particular the difficulty of  securing  financing  not only within Spain but in every surrounding country.

In this sentiment both parties understand that to guarantee the future success of the hotel it is necessary to wait until a degree of normality  returns to the general situation of the market and then go ahead firmly with the project and the  intention of maintaining the excellent relations that exist between both parties and with the mutual conviction that this strategic alliance will deliver strong medium term satisfaction and demonstrate further commitment to the distinct resorts of Calidona within Spain.

To demonstrate the excellent collaboration between both parties we are pleased to communicate that Calidona Rentals and Services and De Vere are currently working to reach an agreement for clients of De Vere to enjoy holidays at Roda Golf & Beach Resort via residential golf and apartment rental packages.
