The endless rescue work of Angie McCready, on the Costa Blanca

Angie moved to the Southern Costa Blanca inland from Alicante 9 years ago from the UK. She hadn't realized the plight of dogs here until she arrived. She was shocked, outraged, and felt she needed to do something. She was soon bottle feeding puppies that had been found dumped in bins, picking up strays from the street, and finding them new homes. Many didn't even go any further than Angie's home... She's a confirmed failed fosterer on more than one occasion. At the last count she has 11 ranging from quite small dogs to a Spanish Mastiff who is the gentlest dog ever.

Sad news on a Barranco puppy
Saturday, September 27, 2014

Generally the puppies have been thriving & having puppy porridge plus milk from a bowl but, since I last blogged, this has happened........

23rd September: Angie posted..."One of the females was circling yesterday so I took her to the vets. She's been on a drip and given anti inflammatories cortizone and pain killers and had X rays. It's a mystery but the vets hoping it's temporary. I have been down to see her last night and again this morning. She knows my voice and is eating well, but wouldn't take the bottle. Shes on a drip to keep her hydrated.

The vet will call again tonight with an update, but feels she's better today than yesterday so I'm keeping everything crossed I can bring her home tomorrow. The vet's bill wont be cheap so if anybody would like to donate a few euros towards it we would be eternally grateful".

24th September: Angie posted.... "Off to the vets this morning to see how our sick puppy is doing but also to take another one thats not well. Totally different symptoms. Yesterday he was feeding and drinking, but was sick after each feed. He wasnt as lively as the others, and last night didnt want anything to eat or drink.

This morning he is the same although I have syringed about 7 mls of water into him and he didn't bring it back up. He's very weak, so will see what the vet says this morning. I can't believe we have come this far and and they were doing so well and now having problems!

Below: This is the vets bill for the 1st puppy.

25th update:  Angie said "Sadly, despite the 2nd puppy, named Beano, having the best care & antibiotics, fluids and vitamins by drip, his breathing was bad & he passed away overnight."

The remaining five are below.

11th: From Angie "The vet called this morning to see the puppies. They are all doing really well. She gave them all another anti-biotic jab to aid with the healing of their wounds which are healing really well. The swollen elbow is looking much better now, and the scabs are dropping off their injuries.

Flint has had 3 bottle feeds today and just wants cuddling all the time!

Thank you to everybody who is following these adorable fighting Pod puppies and to those that have donated. We couldnt do this without you."

11th: From Angie: "Missy is so happy. There's been big steps taken with Missy, all in the right direction. She now greets people at the gate..still keeping a distance, but follows them up the driveway along with the rest of the gang, WAGGING HER TAIL!

She now also follows them into the house and jumps up on the sofa opposite to where they sit instead of staying outside hiding.

My friend came over the other day to help me with the pups and she ventured up to Carol. Normally i ask people not to make eye contact or speak to her, but Carol stretched her hand out and said "hello Missy" and she LICKED HER HAND!!!!! Huge steps for Missy. Here she is this morning having done about 30 laps of the garden playing chase me with Libby."

The Barranco Podenco puppies
Tuesday, September 9, 2014

News came in on Saturday 6th September that seven Podenco puppies had been retrieved from a ravine. One pup was already dead. The pups had been thrown from a moving car into the ravine. The road is the Orxeta/Relleu road. The name of the place is 'EL BARRANCO RUBIO' ORXETA ( EL BARRANCO SALUDO'). They were tied up in a plastic bag. Penelope, who lives in the property below the road in the photo was alerted to their cries.

She & her husband, John, climbed up as far as they could & saw the bag higher up. John managed to climb further to retrieve the bag then another neighbour, Samantha, who Penny called upon for help brought ropes & a pulley & they were able to bring John & the pups up (presumably to the road).

Samantha cared for the six puppies overnight (fed by syringe every two hours). If not found these puppies would not have died immediately, they would have suffered terribly in the intense heat before death took them.

Angie McCready is experienced in weaning very young puppies. She came out of her semi retirement ..that had lasted all of a couple of weeks .. to take them all on. They were transported to her Sunday 7th.

Early Monday morning 8th: 5 of the 6 pups have fed really well, but Angie is worried about one of the little boys, she has named him Flint. He won't take the bottle so Angie had to syringe feed him.

There's 4 boys and 2 girls and it seems they are a bit older than initially thought as 2 of them have their eyes slightly open this morning so they must be around 10 days old."

4:15pm Monday 8/9
Angie took the pups to the vets this morning, they have all had antibiotic jabs. Rosa, the vet, said the lesions on the puppies suggests they have been in very poor conditions from birth, obviously no bedding and so their elbows and knees have developed scabs and are infected.

Below: One puppy has a dislocated leg, too early to xray.

Angie sprayed them last night with Frontline. The dead ticks are still dropping off them.
The vet is going to Angie's home on Thursday morning to have another look at them. It's too early to X ray the limbs that seem to be dislocated, the vet will wait until they are a bit stronger.

Flint is still hanging in there. His breathing seems a bit better, but he still doesn't want to drink from the bottle, so now he has some special milk from the vet which Angie is syringe feeding him with. He remains weak but his eyes have opened today! Another one of the pups has also opened her eyes, so they must be at least 10 days old now.

Update 9/9
WOW, Best birthday present Angie said she could have wished for .....Flint just had his breakfast from the bottle!!

Updates on dogs that have been re homed recently
Monday, September 8, 2014

Much has happened since I last blogged for Angie.

First, it is with deep sadness that I have to post that Leo .. who was Libby & Luke's brother ...& who was adopted by a lady in the UK called Sue, has died end August, after ingesting slug poison in a field. He was taken to a vets, put into an induced sleep to try to prevent the fits but passed away.

There is a petition here about this if you'd care to sign.

Sue wrote to Cambridge News about it.

Below: A tribute to Leo ...please watch.

Sue has now offered Leo's sister, Libby a home. Libby has been with Angie around a year waiting for her chance of a home.

Below: Hooch, Cujo, and Chester, Mastine puppies, are enjoying their new lives in their home in Scotland.

Copper, now called Cooper, lives in Almeria, he's doing well & loving life.

Below: Copper
