I would really apreciate some advice.

I am a UK citizen resident in Spain. If I understand correctly were I to inherit from my parents in the UK then their estate would be taxed in the UK and then I would be taxed on the inheritance as an individual in Spain.

Double tax rules dont apply because there are two different taxes.

Can any tax planning be done to avoid this situation?

Thanks in advance.

Sweden has had a different approach to construction to Spain which has been quite marked over the modern construction era of the last 40 years or so. There are many possible reasons for this.

Anyway - if you want a comfortable home (warm in winter cool in summer) without burning money and fossil fuels then you are probably going to have to build one. This can be easier than you think and there are plenty of other advantages.

There isnt a straight answer to this.

The fact is you need to take a holistic approach. Is there shading for example - either from the local topography or trees or incorporated into the design, pergolas and so on or decent flexible shutters?

Whats is the internal layout like? Are the living areas and bedroom south or the kitchen and utility room?

How are you going to use the house? Are you a night owl or an early riser?.....sunset or sunrise? How will you use it at different times of the year? Some friends of ours cant use their living room in the summer in the afternoon because the sun comes pounding in. The architect apparently gave no thought to orientation or shading. And its not just their house - its a whole row of 30 odd villas all the same!

Is there any insulation to speak of or high tech windows that might mitigate the extremes of summer or winter?

Is the building airtight?

What are your heating and cooling systems like?

All these factors and more will affect the impact of the sun or otherwise on your property.

Good luck!

Hi TomG,

I dont have any I can recommend from personal experience but I am very interested in this sector and I do know of a few old style retirement communities. Perhaps you will be able to help me when you have completed your research.

I am actually looking at the possibility of creating an eco retirement village which goes far further than the conventional self-catering-apartment plus medical asistance formula. This will cater for the baby boomers who are coming up for retirement but arent growing old in the way previous generations have. We would cater for their medical, physical, social, and dare I say it, spiritual well being. In additional the entire community would be energy efficient perhaps even self sufficient and recycle the maximum. Great importance will be given to the quality of the environment.

The project is in its early stages and nothing will be available for 2 or 3 years. We are looking at several sites accross Spain.

I would be very interested to learn whether you find anything similar to what we are planning and indeed what it is you are looking for.
