Hi All

We are loking to send 1 or 2 parcels out to Condado for when we are there in May to furnish our appartment.

As Ryan Air only give us 15 kilos each, and will charge us 15 euros per kilo over, we where thinking of using a courier to send out some of my husbands battery guns / tools etc...

Has anyone used a courier to do this.  If so what was the service like ?  What did they charge ? Did they deliver when expected to your front door ?

Would be gratefull to hear from anyone who has done this, or is anyone driving over and has room for 2 extra boxes for week com 17th May ?

Many thanks

Try alan. he has just collected some boxes from us today and is going over shortly. If you have missed this trip he goes over reguarly and his charges are very good.

Thanks

Hi Debb I spoke to Alan today and he said about 40 EUR per bike to take over as they take up quite a lot of room. so will have a look when Im out next to if its cheaper to buy them out in Spain.

There are various types of "Courier" services you can use with transit times varying from 1-2 days for Express by air and 4-6 days for Deferred by road with Express services obviously being more expensive.

Most people would naturally tend to look at the household names of DHL, UPS, Fedex & TNT but they are expensive and they also class Alhama De Murcia as a "Beyonds" delivery area which attracts a surcharge on top of their tariff. However, there are literally thousands of other companies out there offering services with many of them acting as internet brokers for the big four integrators and offering their services at up to 50% of the cost.

There are a few things to remember when sending goods via courier which many people are not aware of unless they're dealing with it day in & day out.  (1) Volumetric weight charges. i.e. You are paying for the space that your package is taking up that the carrier could otherwise sell. There are calculations to be made to determine whether your shipment would be charged by actual or volumetric weight. Your shipment may only weigh 10.0 Kgs but if it had dimensions of say 60x40x40 cms then you'd be liable for a chargeable volumetric weight of 19.5 Kgs.  (2) Strangely, there are still people around who actually believe that because they're sending via courier service, that someone will actually carry the thing all the way.. Thirty years ago that was the case but sadly now your goods are simply packed into gigantic sacks alongwith other goods and then lodged with the airline/carrier just like passenger baggage. Now I'm sure you've all seen how suitcases are handled at airports.. What I'm saying is that proper packaging is essential and nothing fragile should ever be shipped. If anything is damaged, unless you take out insurance prior to shipping, the carriers liability is restricted under BIFA regulations and is currently around Eur.11- per kilo.  (3) There are of course obvious restrictions as to what you can and can't send similar to those types of things which you cannot take into an aircraft cabin and a whole lot more things too, i.e. Mobile Phones, Liquids, Jewellry, Laptops, Tobacco, Perishables.

Whilst it would be impossible to give a range of rates, just to give you an idea for say a 10.0 kilo package from a main town in England and delivery to door in Spain, you could pay as much as £120 and as little as £65 for Express and as much as £70 and as little as £40 for a Deferred service.

There.... That should have you confused by now..!!

Cheers, Julian.
