Turkey closes in on Spain as Brits' top cheap holiday destination, says new survey
10 April 2011 @ 13:58
TURKEY is becoming THE place to head for a bargain break thanks to plummeting hotel and restaurant prices.
A survey of visitor numbers shows Turkey is closing the gap on long-time favourite Spain and is now the cheapest short-haul sunshine spot outside the eurozone.
Resort prices have plunged by 10 per cent since last year – the biggest drop across Europe – and the pound has strengthened against the Turkish lira.
While prices elsewhere have risen, the average cost of a coffee in Turkey has fallen from £2.03 a year ago to £1.97 now, beer is down from £2.49 to £2.41 and a pack of cigarettes is £2.49, down from £3.07. Post Office researchers compared the year-on-year cost of 10 tourist staples including soft drinks, sunscreen and an evening meal in the resort of Marmaris.

The price of bottled water and sunscreen has risen, but the cost of a restaurant meal for a family of four has dropped from £69 to £55 – 21 per cent cheaper
Many are already taking advantage of the deals, with sales of Turkish lira up eight per cent on last year at post offices.
And tour operators have responded to the better exchange rates by cutting the cost of package deals by up to £203.
Around 2.6million Britons visited Turkey last year – up from 2.1million in 2008.
Post Office head of travel Sarah Munro said: “Turkey is back on the radar as a value destination. Prices are well down while Sterling is up four per cent.”

I travel to Florida a lot and have found there are lots of ways to save money along the way to a holiday. You can save before you go and you can save on the costs if you shop around as there are currently some great deals to be had.

When I was in Bulgaria(having a great time: cause it's a great with open friendly people, beautyfull women, great food, enz, enz) We decided we would go to India by land through turkey! Big mistake, we left feeling really good, like nothing could get us down. After the first day surrounded by the turkish that feeling was gone, and after 3 more days we decided to turn around & get back as fast as possible to the beautyfull Bulgarian people. The turkish culture is the most horrible, unfriendly, commercial(& very expansive), that's wy I laugh when I here anyone say it's so cheap. Maybe in comparison to the english prices for tabbacco & beer/hotels. In comparison to Bulgaria it's about 4 times as expansive in almost everything, and transport (trains/busses enz) is maybe around 8 times(if not more) You can travel from Sophia(extreem west) to the Black sea(extreem east) for 12 euro(first class). A taxi never cost more than 5, through the whole city. We felt like really rich gods there & only 5 days of trying to get forward through that horrible country Turkey & our funds were nearly finished. And we didn't buy the touristic bullshit that they try(relentlesly) to sell you on every corner, when we realised what a horrible place it was we just tried to pass through it as fast as possible. But a bussticket or train in turkey is not at all like a Bulgarian. The people hate dogs (I had my dog with me, wich made us seem like completly crasy people to them) they don't understand at all wy you would have a animal that your not gonna eat or does some usefull work for you. I hardly saw any pets(I saw two dogs in all my time there, and they looked in very bad shape) at most singing birds, or a cat(but they don't sell catfood/ or dogfood ANYWHERE) against the mice. The people is all working, selling, making money. That's all they care about. Putting up there marketstand/taking down there marketstand. Completly intolorant against anything different (not Turkish), but when they see someone different looking(white) they first try in the most annoing fake, slimy kind way to sell you any garbage they can. And when it's clear you don't want there stuff they of coarse drop interest like a sack of bricks, unless your a white girl then you get (after the usual trying to sell you something/anything) the most ugly proposals for sex, wich when you say "No, I have to go!" are followed by something in turkish, clearly not a complement. We had no anger when we entered Turkia, we were very positive, but it just grew (the anger) with every hour in that place, with every new person we met. An as soon as we were back in beautyfull Bulgaria every person we met was like a breath of fresh air. It was a relief to get out of Turkey & I wouldn't wanna go back, not even if they payed me for it. Never again. Motherland of all irritation, irritating moneyhungry people & ugly women(men & children too, of coarse) Bah! And for food it's really 80% kebab/turkish fruit(again both 4 times as expansive as in Bulgaria) And to think that some of the turks I actually sat & talked with(there's not many that speak anything but turkish) were themselves so racist, that when I mention I just came from Bulgaria & I think it is a great place, they went on & on, on how it's not, that Bulgarian people are shit & turkia has much more this & that...better culture, kinder people(HA!)... and so I ask them: "Ooh, so you have been there & you didn't have a good time?" , No, they never been there! In fact the guy I was talking to never been out of the country(he did speak a bit of English though) but he was really just interested in going to see amerika, or Germany(or Holland) France, but he said it was difficult to get a visa if your Turkish. No shit, none of these country's are happy with more turks coming over, taking there "culture" over here together with there pride of the "turkish way" & a complete revusal not just to integrate, but even to just mingle. there intention to make a little money. Putting up there marketstand & trying to sell you something, or starting yet another kebabshop is the only thing they bring. Still I find Turks outside of turkey a little bit better then the turks there. Really I was not racist at all against the tukish culture or way of life until I travelled through it & experienced it first hand, now I hate it! My grandfather was turkish, but he left at an early age & travelled all over the world, saw many things, widened his horizon and even he warned me against the turkish. His own people! Said it was a stupid, stubborn race that will never change. Fifteen years later having travelled through it: I agree. But... this is just my experience, my good friend that I respect a lot just happen to come back from there right after me and he had a good times(But he was invited by turkish friends who showed him around, it's always different when you know people. If you have friends.) As a tourist just arriving & not knowing allready some people, it sucks. Bah!!!
