Is it just me or are Mercadona's prices creeping up?
17 February 2011 @ 22:32
I've noticed recently that prices in Mercadona have been starting to go up. The odd few cents here and there. I used to always do my main shop here up until recently, when the prices started going up. I now do most of my shopping at Carrefour, who have been aggressively cutting prices over the last few months. I think I'm also getting bored of Mercadona's rather limited range.
Has anyone else noticed the price increases?

I agree. It is getting more expensive and although their range has improved it is still limited.
I might try Carrefour again and see how they are these days.

Their prices are going up slowly. We do a split shop at both Carrefour and Mercadona. There is one area where Mercadona will always come out above Carrefour...Gluten Free products...For those folks with allergy problems or 'suffering' from Coeliac Disease, Mercadonas range of G/F foods is very good. The also sell fresh milk that actually tastes of milk and not that awful stuff pushed out by Puleleva that tends to go off between taking it off the shelf and getting it home.
Just for the record, Alcampo too stock a good range of G/F foods particularly bread and biccys.

Mercadona's prices are definitely going up. Last week I bought 1 litre of fresh cow's milk for 83 cents, this week they changed the 1 litre carton to a 1.5 litre plastic bottle and put the price up to 1.65! This is a price rise of 30% in the matter of days! How do people afford to shop there with price hikes like this?

I've been saying this for quite a while now. The prices have been steadily creeping up at Mercadona. It literally is the odd few cents here and there but it is a weekly thing. I compared two shopping bills over a three week period and most of the Hacendado (own brand)items had risen. I agree the choice there is limited but up until recently had always shopped there as it used to be much cheaper than Carrefour. However, given a weekly shop for the basics costs us 100 Euros at Mercadona ( and rising!) we now use Carrefour instead as it works out so much cheaper than Mercadona and has a much wider choice of items. We try to stick to their Carrefour Discount brands wherever possible and have found that we are saving around 30 Euros a week by doing our weekly shop there instead. We now spend 70 Euros in Carrefour compared to 100 Euros for the same items in Mercadona.

In the last few weeks they have really gone up. I've noticed it on a lot of products. It's quite shocking really. One notable product is eggs, something I'd considered a good cheap healthy food option, yet they have risen a massive 30% just in a matter of weeks. Is there any reason for this? Of course my wage in Spain has actually gone down, so this is very worrying.
