Cheapest Supermarket in Spain?
21 February 2010 @ 12:59

Mercadona is officially the cheapest supermarket in Spain according to research from the Spanish government.  The Spanish Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Commerce publishes detailed quarterly research reports into the Spanish supermarkets.  The latest report can be found here.  Unfortunately, it is in Spanish but if you go to page 25 you will find a table showing a list of supermarkets ranked in order of how cheap they are.

Mercadona is number one, which is no real surprise.  It's where we tend to do most of our shopping.  I was very surprised to see that Carrefour is one of the cheapest supermarkets in Spain.  I've never really been to Carrefour because for some reason I assumed it would be expensive.

El Corte Ingles and Hipercor are the most expensive, as you would expect.

The only problem with this report is that it doesn't include Aldi and Lidl, which are probably two of the cheapest supermarkets in Spain.

mercadona definately the best for sliced bread (60c.)and own brand lager (much nicer than most big brands). The fresh veg.competes well with local farmers markets. The individual wrapped spanish cakes sold by weight are really cheap and keep for weeks.Wine and spirits are best bought on special offers in all supermarkets so just buy when its there and keep for your own stock. It keeps for ages if you dont get tempted and open the bottle! As for fresh bread we buy half prepared and freeze it,then cook in little minioven for 8 mins. whilst setting table.Warm fresh bread for every meal.Lovely.
