We returned recently and often wonder how the Spanish authorities think about people leaving in these numbers. Surely, the economy in some parts of Spain (Costas?) must be largely dependent on Expats retired and otherwise? It is true Blighty is a Blighted place to be at the moment (the political parties each thinking they can see us out of recession - they can see?) but of course there is "ones birthplace" aspect and certainly easier to operate in given no language barriers. But there is an element of "rip-off" in both countries and I see it becoming harder to keep costs down as those in authority seek to raise this and that cost to stay alive themselves. What may be of concern is the next global "crash" - but maybe I'm being too cynical!

I tried to log on the other day and was rejected. After phoning them from the UK I discovered that they were just updating their website. I am glad he told me the english version will be next week but hope that it is better than the previous version of website. Did manage to logon though after that but yet to understand it all. Having said that BBVA has always given good service even to reminding us in the UK to sign our 2 year tax expat forms.

Anyone else bank with them and experienced the changes?

I have an account in Spain which I will soon need to close (as we are now back in UK). Really just waiting for that tax you have to pay when you sell even if there is no CG tax owing (our solicitor has applied for it but it can take up to two years for it to be returned).

Anyone advise on the best way to close it down and get money back in UK?

On the original subject of accounts frozen, is this still a problem? Our bank always sends us a form every two years.

Currently my bank is quoting 0.8922 which for 20K gives me 17844GBP. Less charges either end. I did check with HiFX and they were quoting me some 0.25 better rate but I am in the UK so to get my bank (BBVA) to transfer (by FAX them my details) is all a bit manyana so I might be late delivering the funds to the exchange company. At the moment the rate looks good for Euros to pounds so I am staying with a normal bank transfer.
