El Grumpy Gringo - Signposts

Lost in SpainIs it too much to ask that they put up signposts in appropriate places?

How often have you been heading for somewhere – you follow signposts for miles, some of which are totally unnecessary, just being stuck at the side of the road for no apparent reason, then finally you come to a junction. Do you turn left or right? You have absolutely no idea because here - in this strategic place, they haven’t bothered to put up a signpost.

You invariably take the wrong turn and end up in some God-forsaken village with narrow streets encased by high walls on both sides, no pavements and barely wide enough to take a pushchair. You grit your teeth and start praying that nothing is coming the other way.

Of course it always is – and it’s usually bigger than you and driven by a hostile psychopath who insists with lots of arm waving that you back up. Just as you have backed your way uphill and round numerous bends (trying not to hit the little old ladies dressed in black and the basuras), you finally see a widening in the road where you can pull in. At that precise moment some pillock in an Audi comes hurtling down the hill towards you and parks in the pull in, cleverly managing to take up all the space. You ask him nicely to move back a bit so you can squeeze in. Of course he totally ignores you and disappears into a shop/office/bar.

Meanwhile the psycho is tooting his horn and gesturing again. This has absolutely no effect on matey with the Audi who refuses to come out and move, but shreds your nerves to pieces. And so you continue on your backward journey until, finally, you’ve reached the edge of the village and you can escape, vowing never to return.
