Description
*** www.casaazulcazorla.com ***
A simple, traditional, Andalucian 'cortijo' in a tranquil location in the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas. This is the largest protected natural area in Spain and the second largest in Europe. Set in its own olive grove below the majestic mountains, Casa Azul is a place to escape the city and relax. Sleeping 8 it's full of character, quirky charm and style. Great for sports enthusiasts with hiking, cycling and horse riding on your doorstep, or go explore some of the many beautiful historic towns nearby - Ubeda, Baeza, Cazorla, Castril, even Granada.
Casa Azul is set in just outside the tiny village of Aldea de Cuenca near Hinojares. The mountains of the Sierras de Cazorla rise steeply behind it while the land to the south falls away into the famous olive groves of the Jaen region. This area is the biggest producer of some of the best olive oil in the world and there are a number of artisan producers nearby where you can buy delicious oils. Aldea de Cuenca is a traditional farming village - very quiet with friendly locals who like a chat. They are mostly olive farmers but there are some livestock too and if you're lucky you'll hear the lovely sound of the bells on the sheep and goats as they graze on the mountain slopes behind the house. Its also a great place for watching wildlife; Griffon Vulture and Golden Eagle will soar high above you on the mountain face while lower down in the olive groves the Hoopee Bird will go about his daily business.
The old property is simply furnished in keeping with its history. In winter it is heated by two woodburners and gas heaters while the thick stone walls, small windows and mountain location means it maintains a reasonable temperature during the hot summer months.
The accommodation consists of the following:
Ground Floor:
Open plan lounge/kitchen/diner with;
Double sofa-bed and wood burning stove, Smart TV
Large dining table for 8
5 ring gas hob and oven, large fridge freezer, dishwasher, granite worktops
Moroccan "snug" with sofa - a small room where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the kitchen/lounge. Great for a bit of peace and quiet!
"The Boot Room" with antique wood burning stove and rocking chair
Utility Room with washing machine, sink, iron and drying rack.
Bathroom - with shower, basin and wc
Upstairs:
Master bedroom - antique double bed and single bed with ensuite shower room,
Bedroom 2 - large room with 4 single beds
Bedroom 3 - 1 single bed
Outside:
Parking for 5+ cars
Stone terrace with inbuilt BBQ
Terraced olive grove and fruit trees
Dining table and chairs for 6
4 x lounge chairs
2 sun loungers
The place is your own for the duration of your stay so along with the entire house you've got the outside terrace and olive grove to call home. This is not a holiday complex, it is, and feels like a real home.
Things to do in the region:
Follow the way marked walking trail through the olive groves and river valley to the pretty Andalusian village of Hinojares (6 km) where there are a couple of good bars and a pizzeria, or alternatively try one of the other short local walks around Aldea de Cuenca ( details in the house)
Visit the Sanctuario at nearby Tiscar with its impressive waterfall and gorge (15 minutes)
Visit the beaches at Lake Negratin for swimming and kayaking. There are some great bars and restaurants serving free tapas - the Spanish go here and make a day of it. (30 minutes)
Swim in some of the great municipal outdoor pools in the region (open late June to early September). Most towns have one and the nearest is at Pozo Alcon (10km). The pools are a lovely way to spend an afternoon, perhaps with a picnic They have grassed areas and shady gardens around a large pool along with bars, restaurants, showers etc. Entrance fee is only a couple of Euro. There are also excellent pools at Castril and Cuevas de Campo
Go horse riding at the stables in Hinojares with 1 hour to full day rides on beautiful Andalucian horses.
Visit Castril de Peña, an historic whitewashed Andalucian 'pueblo' with museum, restaurants, bars and outdoor pool.
Castril Gorge Walk - a fantastic 1 hour walk through the gorge from Castril along a suspended boardwalk. Highly recommended. There are bars for refreshments at either end.
Explore some of the lovely mountain villages in the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Cazorla - Quesada, Huesa, Cazorla, Arroyo Frio.
Go house hunting in the Altiplano de Granada. The area is famous for its quirky cave houses, many of which can be bought very reasonably.
Explore the intriguing landscapes of the Goraf desert
Visit the ancient towns of Ubeda and Baeza, both of which have World Heritage status. 1 hour.
And don't forget the beautiful city of Granada with its Alhambra, and much much more... 1 hour 40 mins.
Or in winter, how about skiing in the Sierra Nevada National Park? - its 2hr 30 mins to the ski-lifts, less to the National Park.
