Mobile phone

Hello again everyone my sister in law is now on her way to becoming a resident in Spain.

she has mentioned that she needs to have a Spanish mobile phone number/sim to become a resident is this true or has she been told the wrong information.

No, she does not need a mobile phone, or any other type of phone, to become a resident of Spain.

I am aware this answer comes a bit late but... for others who might have same question. Of course, there is not a legal need for a Spanish mobile phone for applying for Spanish residency. If that is practical/ recommendable.. possibly yes.

Well our friends in valencia have just done the same and to change everything over iberdola refused to phone an english mobile number for the registration process he had to get a spanish sim for just them.other wise it could block his TIE.

He has had his place there 20 years and was with iberdola already SO I FIND IT A BITT BIZZARE.He has done the residencia  as most are doing to beat the 183 day rule.I lent him an old movistar phone to put the sim in..

If you are a full time Spanish Resident .. why would you want a UK mobile..I think you will find that  UK mobile providers will not issue a contract mobile phone to a Spanish resident as you need a UK bank account and address too obtain a contract phone ..same goes for a non contract mobile as you need a UK bank card to top up the phone .

Lots of reasons one would want a UK mobile....people in UK are perhaps reluctant to call a Spanish number because of potential costs....in my case I have a cheapie Spanish mobile (Llamaya) for local use....which doesn't seem to work outside Spain...my UK (giffgaff)  phone fields calls very cheaply and I have no problems topping it up (£10 every few months)  from a UK bank card, of which I have a few...using a UK address.

To use the Llamaya phone outside Spain you have to activate the roaming service by calling 2376.

If you go outside the EU the data will be disabled and you have to follow SMS instructions on how to unlock it.
(Saves unexpected big bills, so they say).

I have a Llamaya for use in Spain and used it for calls in UK whilst we were still in the EU. Now I have a contract free EE phone which I top up using a UK account as you do. 

For the Llamaya one it is an old Nokia phone (about 20 euro) and I top up with 10 euro when needed. Also need it for the bank and the health service which won't accept UK mobile numbers.
