For many of us in the Eye on Spain community, the dream of exploring the Iberian Peninsula in a motorhome or campervan is the ultimate expression of Spanish freedom. Whether it’s waking up to a sunrise over the Cabo de Gata or finding a quiet spot in the Picos de Europa, "van life" has exploded in popularity since the pandemic.

However, that popularity has brought growing pains. To address rising tensions in coastal towns and urban areas, the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) has released Instruction PROT 2026/04, a significant update to the 2023 framework. If you own a camper or are planning a road trip this summer, here is what you need to know to avoid a heavy fine.

1. Parking vs. Camping: The Golden Rule

The most frequent source of fines for expats is the confusion between "parking" and "camping." The DGT has now empowered local councils with much stricter authority to enforce the distinction.

You are PARKING (Legal): If your vehicle is in contact with the ground only via its tyres (no stabilisers), no windows or awnings are extended, and no liquids are being discharged. In this state, you have the same rights as any car.

You are CAMPING (Restricted): If you put out chairs, level the vehicle with chocks, or open a side awning. This is now strictly limited to designated campsites and "Area de Autocaravanas."

Local Power: Be warned—town councils (ayuntamientos) now have the green light to ban overnight stays in specific zones, even if you are just "parking," particularly in saturated tourist hotspots. Always check for the new S-128 sign, which indicates official waste disposal and parking zones.

2. Know Your Category: M vs. N

The DGT is cracking down on ITV (technical inspection) schedules. The frequency of your inspection now depends strictly on how your vehicle is registered:

Category M (Motorhomes): These follow the same rules as private cars. You are exempt for the first four years, then it’s every two years, and finally annually once the vehicle hits ten years old.

Category N (Campervans/Adapted Vans): Because these are technically "industrial" vehicles, the rules are tougher. They require an annual inspection from day one until they are ten years old, after which they must pass the ITV every six months.

Failure to follow the correct schedule for an N-type vehicle is becoming a "low-hanging fruit" for traffic police during roadside checks.

3. The New "Eco-Enforcement"

A major driver of these new rules is environmental protection. The DGT has noted a rise in the "unregulated dumping" of grey and black water. The new legislation encourages the use of designated reception areas which provide hookups and drainage.

For the Eye on Spain community, the takeaway is clear: while the open road remains open, the "wild" element of camping is being reined in. If you’re heading out, download a reliable app like Park4Night or Caramaps, but always cross-reference it with local signage. The "I didn't know" excuse will no longer hold water—literally or figuratively.

Are you a motorhome owner in Spain? Have you noticed stricter policing in your local area? Share your experiences in the comments section.

The Last Caña? Why Spain is Fighting to Save Its ‘Protected’ Barrio Bars

For many of us, the local "bar de barrio" is the heartbeat of Spanish life. It’s where we have our first café con leche of the morning, where we catch up on the local gossip, and where the waiter knows exactly how you like your caña.

However, a sobering new report from The Telegraph highlights a worrying trend: Spain is losing its traditional bars at a rate of roughly one per day. As the property market evolves and modern tastes shift, the classic "no-frills" tavern—with its stainless-steel counters, paper napkins on the floor, and legendary tapas—is under threat.

The Changing Face of the Barrio

The decline is being driven by a "perfect storm" of economic factors. Rising commercial rents in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia are forcing out long-term family businesses. In their place, we often see international coffee chains or "chic" brunch spots designed for tourists rather than residents.

For property buyers and renters moving to Spain for "authenticity," this shift is a double-edged sword. While modern amenities are welcome, the loss of these social hubs can change the very character of the neighbourhood you chose to live in.

Madrid Fights Back: "Protected" Status

Recognizing that these bars are more than just businesses—they are cultural heritage—local authorities are starting to take action. In Madrid, several historic taverns have been granted "protected" status. This means:

Architectural Preservation: The original storefronts, hand-painted tiles, and internal fixtures cannot be removed or modernised beyond recognition.

Cultural Subsidies: In some cases, bars that have been in operation for over a century receive tax breaks to help them compete with global franchises.

What This Means for Property Buyers

If you are currently scouting for a property in Spain, the presence of a thriving local bar scene is often a "green flag" for a healthy, integrated community. Areas where these bars are closing rapidly are often undergoing intense gentrification, which can lead to higher property prices but a potential loss of that "authentic" Spanish feel.

Tips for Supporting Your Local Bar

If you’ve recently moved or are renting long-term, here is how you can help preserve the local culture:

Skip the Chain: For your morning coffee, try the family-run bar on the corner instead of the global franchise.

Embrace the "Menu del Día": It remains the best value-for-money lunch in Europe (often still found for £10–£12 / €12–€14) and keeps these kitchens running.

The barrio bar is the ultimate "low-friction" gateway to Spanish society. It’s where the community meets, and for expats, it’s often the best place to truly feel at home. Let’s make sure they stay open for the next generation of arrivals.

In a significant move that signals a warming of post-Brexit relations, the Spanish government has announced it is scrapping visa requirements for British nationals heading to Spain for short-term work.

The decision, which was unveiled during UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ high-profile visit to Madrid this week, is set to remove one of the most frustrating bureaucratic hurdles for British professionals, digital nomads, and business owners since the UK left the European Union.

What is Changing?

Previously, while British tourists could enjoy the "90-day rule" for sun and sand, any activity deemed "work"—from attending a series of business meetings to consulting on a short-term project—technically required a C-type or D-type visa. These had to be secured via a Spanish consulate in the UK, a process often plagued by delays and significant paperwork.

Under the new rules, British citizens will be exempt from these visa requirements provided their work stint in Spain lasts less than 90 days.

A Boost for the Economy and the Property Market

The timing of the announcement coincided with a meeting between Chancellor Reeves and Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo, alongside representatives from 120 of Spain’s top businesses. The diplomatic push is expected to unlock roughly £250 million in additional services exports over the next five years.

For our community at Eye on Spain, this news is particularly relevant for three key groups:

The "Workation" Crowd: If you own a second home in Spain and have previously been nervous about taking "working holidays" due to visa technicalities, this change offers much-needed peace of mind.

Property Investors: Greater ease of movement for professionals usually precedes increased interest in commercial and residential real estate. As business ties tighten, the demand for short-term rentals in business hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga is likely to see a boost.

Tradespeople and Consultants: For those in the UK looking to provide specialised services to the expat community or Spanish firms (from surveying to high-end interior design), the "visa wall" has effectively been lowered.

A Stronger Partnership

The move follows a period of intense lobbying from the hospitality and tech sectors, who have long argued that the post-Brexit visa regime was stifling growth. Minister Carlos Cuerpo highlighted the importance of the relationship, stating, “The United Kingdom is, and will remain, one of Spain's most important partners.”

Chancellor Reeves echoed this sentiment, emphasising that "reducing friction at the border" is a core principle of the UK’s new economic strategy with the EU.

What’s Next?

While the announcement has been met with widespread acclaim from business groups, some legal experts note that we are still awaiting the full publication of the law in the Official State Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado) to see the exact implementation date and any specific "fine print" regarding the types of work covered.

For now, however, the message is clear: Spain is open for business, and for British professionals, the journey just got a whole lot easier.

For years, the dream of moving to Spain came with a well-known caveat: the "mañana" culture. While we love the relaxed pace of a three-hour lunch, the paperwork involved in setting up a new life—banking, utilities, and residency—often felt like a relic of a different century.

However, 2026 is proving to be a landmark year for the "Digital Expat." Whether you are looking at a sleek apartment in Marbella or a rustic finca in the Murcian countryside, the digital tools at your disposal have transformed the relocation process.

1. Banking Without the Borders

Traditionally, opening a Spanish bank account was the first "boss level" of moving. You needed a NIE (tax number), a stack of translated documents, and a physical appointment.

Today, digital-first platforms like Revolut and N26 have become the gold standard for new arrivals. They allow you to hold Euros, enjoy competitive exchange rates, and—crucially—handle everything from your smartphone. While a local Spanish IBAN is still often required for certain utility bills, these digital banks provide a bridge that didn't exist five years ago, allowing you to pay for your first café con leche the moment you land.

2. High-Speed Spain: No More Buffering

One of the biggest concerns for property buyers is connectivity, especially for the growing number of digital nomads. Spain has invested heavily in its infrastructure, and the results are impressive. Median fixed internet download speeds in Spain have surged to over 229 Mbps, outperforming many other European neighbours.

Even in semi-rural areas and coastal regions, fiber-optic "FTTH" (Fiber to the Home) is now common. This means you can stream UK or Irish television, join Zoom calls, or manage your property rentals from your terrace without the dreaded "buffering" wheel.

3. Bureaucracy Goes Paperless (Mostly)

The Spanish government has confirmed a major digital overhaul of the residency system for 2026. The goal is to move away from fragmented regional systems toward a unified digital platform for visas and TIE (residency card) renewals.

Centralised Submissions: Soon, you'll be able to upload digital versions of your documents directly, reducing the risk of "lost paperwork."

The Cl@ve System: If you haven't already, getting your Cl@ve PIN or digital certificate is now the single most important thing you can do. It allows you to book doctor’s appointments, check your driving licence points, and even pay local taxes from your laptop.

4. Home Comforts via the Cloud

Homesickness is often just "TV-sickness." The way expats consume media has shifted entirely from massive 2-meter satellite dishes to professional IPTV and streaming services. While Amazon and other providers are tightening rules on unapproved apps, the availability of high-speed fiber means that "Internet TV" is now the reliable, high-definition standard for keeping up with the news and shows from back home.

5. Shopping and Services

The "heavy lifting" of moving into a new home is also being mitigated by technology. Major supermarket chains now offer sophisticated delivery apps, and local startups are connecting expats with organic farms and specialty services. If you’re moving into a hilly pueblo where carrying groceries in the heat is a chore, these apps are a literal lifesaver.

The Eye on Spain Verdict

The "digitalization" of Spain isn't just about convenience; it’s about integration. By removing the friction of daily tasks, expats can spend less time at the Extranjería (foreigner’s office) and more time enjoying the culture, gastronomy, and 300 days of sunshine that drew them to Spain in the first place.

If you are currently looking at properties, don't just ask about the view—ask about the fiber connection. In 2026, the best of both worlds is finally within reach.

Are you navigating the new digital landscape in Spain?

If you've been driving in Spain recently, you’ve likely heard the chatter about the new V16 emergency beacons. As of January 1, 2026, these connected flashing lights officially replaced the traditional warning triangles as a mandatory safety requirement for vehicles on Spanish roads.

While the DGT claims the beacons (which cost between €30 and €50) will make breakdowns safer, the rollout has sparked plenty of controversy. Even the European Commission has questioned the legality of making the new tech compulsory. But despite the debates, the first fines are already being handed out.

If you've been slapped with a penalty for not having a V16 beacon, don't panic just yet. Here is a look at what went wrong with the rollout and how you might be able to challenge the fine.

The First Fines Are Already Here. The first highly publicised fine was issued on January 6th (Three Kings' Day) to a driver on the AP-7 motorway near Valencia. A Guardia Civil traffic officer handed the driver an €80 fine (reducible to €40 for prompt payment) for failing to carry the regulatory V-16 signal, citing breaches of the Traffic Law and General Vehicle Regulations.

The fine quickly caught the attention of legal experts, highlighting a massive contradiction between the actions of the Guardia Civil and the promises made by the Spanish government.

What Happened to the Promised "Grace Period"? Before the law came into effect, the DGT and top government officials—including Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and DGT Director Pere Navarro—spoke publicly about a transitional "grace period." Expats and locals alike were assured that officers would initially focus on informing and educating drivers about the new requirement rather than immediately reaching for their ticket books.

The problem? This grace period was entirely verbal. It was never officially put into writing, nor was an end date defined. This vagueness left a legal grey area, meaning traffic officers on the ground have been legally permitted to issue fines from day one, despite the public reassurances of leniency.

How You Can Challenge the Fine. If you have received a fine during these early weeks of the new law, you have the right to file an appeal (recurso).

According to Pyramid Consulting, a legal firm specialising in Spanish traffic fines, drivers have a solid foundation to appeal based on the legal principle of "legitimate expectations" (principio de confianza legítima). In Spanish law, this doctrine dictates that public administration must act in a predictable, consistent, and transparent manner.

Because top officials publicly promised a grace period and no immediate fines, penalising drivers just days into the new year contradicts those statements. In simple terms, the authorities promised leniency, the public trusted that promise, and therefore, early enforcement is unfair.

While success is never 100% guaranteed—since the law technically remains in force—legal experts suggest that appeals that cite this lack of a defined grace period and the conflicting official messages have a very good chance of succeeding.

A Quick Note for Expats and Tourists If you are driving a rental car, the hire company should be responsible for ensuring the vehicle is equipped with a V16 beacon. Additionally, the mandate currently targets Spanish-registered vehicles, so if you are driving a foreign-registered car on a visit to Spain, you should technically be exempt—though having one certainly doesn't hurt for your own safety.

Whether you’ve just moved to the Costas or you’ve been living in Spain for years, it’s easy to fall into the routine of visiting the same familiar hotspots. But beyond the well-trodden paths of the Costa del Sol and the big-city buzz of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain hides some truly magical corners.

A recent feature by National Geographic highlighted seven lesser-known towns that offer a glimpse into the "real" Spain—perfect for an expat weekend getaway or a scouting trip if you're looking for a quieter pace of life.

From the misty mountains of the north to the windswept Atlantic coast, here is the full list of destinations every Spain-based resident should have on their radar.

1. Beget (Catalonia): The Ultimate Off-Grid Escape

If you really want to leave the modern world behind, head to the Catalan Pyrenees. Beget is so tucked away that it wasn't even accessible by car until the 1960s and only received mobile phone service in 2023. Today, it remains a honey-hued treasure of cobblestone streets and stone bridges.

Don’t Miss: The 12th-century Church of Sant Cristòfol.

Best For: Hikers and those looking for authentic mountain cuisine. It’s a key starting point for the Camí de Nord, a stunning trail through ancient oak forests.

2. Aínsa (Aragon): A Medieval Fortress with a View

Located in the Aragonese Pyrenees near the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Aínsa is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s not just a gorgeous medieval village; it’s a strategic hub for some of the best birdwatching and mountain biking in Europe.

Highlight: The Zona Zero mountain biking destination features over 150 miles of marked trails.

Nature Lovers: Visit the Pyrenees Bird Centre along the town's fortress walls to see majestic birds of prey.

3. Combarro (Galicia): Coastal Charm Without the Crowds

Galicia offers a completely different vibe from the Mediterranean south. Combarro is famous for its hórreos—unique stone granaries raised on stilts that line the shoreline. While it is on a variant of the Camino de Santiago, it remains much quieter than the main routes.

Why Go: To see quintessential Galician architecture and enjoy some of the freshest seafood in the country.

Pro Tip: Visit during the low season (even if it rains!) to see the 60+ stone granaries without the summer crowds.

4. Priego de Córdoba (Andalusia): The World's Best Olive Oil

This village checks every box for a southern Spanish escape: whitewashed facades, cascading magenta flowers, and sweeping hilltop views. But Priego’s true "liquid gold" is its extra-virgin olive oil, which has been recognized as the best in the world for 14 consecutive years.

The Experience: Take a tour of 1,000-year-old groves at mills like Aceites Vizcántar to see the extraction process.

Don't Miss: A hike to La Tiñosa, the area’s highest peak, where you can see farmers still harvesting olives by hand.

5. San Martín del Castañar (Castile and León): A Step Back in Time

Located south of Salamanca in the heart of the Sierra de Francia, this town feels like a living museum. It features half-timbered houses, Roman bridges, and the second-oldest bullring in Spain.

Nature & Art: Hike the Camino de Espejos, a nearly 6-mile trek through chestnut forests where sculptures are hidden among the trees.

Summer Tip: Cool off like a local in the natural spring pool located in the Parque Municipal.

6. Zumaia (Basque Country): Geological Wonders and Txakoli

An hour east of Bilbao lies Zumaia, home to the "Flysch"—coastal rock formations that look like the pages of a giant stone book revealing 15 million years of history.

In recent years, the narrative surrounding Spanish rosé has undergone a radical transformation. Long relegated to the category of "summer-only" refreshment or a second-tier substitute for reds and whites, Spanish rosados are now proving they possess a sophistication once thought impossible: the ability to age gracefully.

There is a growing movement of wineries that are treating rosé not as a fleeting seasonal product, but as a fine wine capable of developing "the charm of maturity." These producers are utilising old vines, barrel fermentation, and extended bottle ageing to create complex, gastronomic wines that rival the best reds and whites of Spain.

Here are the standout age-worthy rosés featured in the article that are redefining the category:

1. Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosado 2008

Winery: López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia (Rioja DOCa) A true legend in the wine world, this is the only surviving wine of its kind in Rioja. Released only in exceptional vintages (this 2008 is the first since 2000), it undergoes four years in barrels and four more in the bottle. It is celebrated for its delicate elegance, featuring notes of dried rose, cinnamon, and fresh almonds.

2. Chivite Colección 125 Rosado 2022

Winery: Chivite Family Estates (VT 3 Riberas) First created in 1985, this barrel-fermented blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha was a pioneer of quality rosé. While it is delightful when fresh, it is known to be truly surprising after eight years of bottle aging, offering a refined palate with high acidity and notes of noble woods and spices.

3. Classica Gran Reserva Rosado 2013

Winery: López de Haro (Rioja DOCa) Made from old-vine Garnacha Tinta and Viura, this wine spends four years in oak and at least six in the bottle. It is characterised by its bright acidity, spicy floral notes, and a persistence that promises a very long life in the cellar.

4. Le Rosé 2022

Winery: Antídoto (Ribera del Duero DO) Created by French winemaker Bertrand Sourdais, this "Grand Cru" of Ribera del Duero rosés is sourced from a single plot where Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grows alongside white Albillo. Fermented and aged in barrels, it is a rich, mineral-driven wine that is stunning with age.

5. Valduero Rosado Reserva 2016

Winery: Valduero (Ribera del Duero DO) The García Viadero family applies their expertise in extended aging to this Reserva, which spends four years in barrel and two in bottle. It maintains vibrant red fruit and silky textures while gaining complex spicy undertones.

6. Gran Caus Rosado 2023

Winery: Can Ràfols dels Caus (Penedès DO). This 100% Merlot "rosé with a red soul" comes from the limestone soils of the Garraf Massif. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for six months in the bottle before release, its concentration and firm acidity allow it to evolve beautifully over time, defying the convention that Merlot rosés must be consumed immediately.

7. 200 Monges Rosado Reserva 2017

Winery: Vinícola Real (Rioja DOCa) Winemaker Miguel Ángel Rodríguez honours the Rioja tradition with this bold blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha. Aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels, it offers a sophisticated profile of fruit and sweet spice with a delicate, characteristic bitterness on the finish.

These wines represent a shift in the Spanish wine landscape. By embracing traditional techniques and the inherent potential of their terroirs, these wineries are proving that rosé can be a serious, collectable, and deeply rewarding experience for those patient enough to let them mature.

If you ask the average wine drinker to define Sherry, you might be met with a blank stare or a vague reference to a sweet drink enjoyed by elderly relatives at Christmas. But here in Spain, and specifically in the south-west, Sherry (or Jerez) is a serious cultural institution with a complexity that rivals the world’s finest wines.

For expats and visitors looking to navigate the wine lists of Andalusia, understanding the basics is key. Based on insights from Foods and Wines from Spain, here is a primer on the dry Sherry styles that form the foundation of this iconic Spanish drink.

Sherry is exclusively produced in the "Marco de Jerez," a triangle of land defined by three towns: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. While the region is famous for its unique solera ageing system, there is a growing movement returning to the roots of the vine, emphasising specific vineyard parcels (pagos) and how the land influences the final glass.

The vast majority of dry Sherry is made from the white Palomino grape. It is chosen for its neutral flavour profile, which acts as a blank canvas for the ageing process.

After fermentation, the wines are classified into two main paths:

Biological Ageing: Wines fortified to about 15.5% alcohol, allowing a layer of native yeast called flor to grow on the surface. This yeast protects the wine from oxygen and imparts unique flavours.

Oxidative Ageing: Wines fortified to at least 17% alcohol. This higher strength prevents flor from surviving, exposing the wine to oxygen and creating a darker, richer profile.

Have you ever wondered why Sherry bottles rarely show a vintage year? It’s because of the solera y criaderas system. This method involves fractional blending where younger wines are systematically mixed with older wines. The result is a consistent product where every bottle contains a tiny drop of wine that could be decades (or even a century) old.

1. Fino

A pale, delicate wine aged entirely under the layer of flor yeast. It is dry, crisp, and carries notes of almonds, wild herbs, and dough. It is the perfect match for tapas, olives, and Iberian ham.

2. Manzanilla

Essentially a Fino, but produced exclusively in the coastal town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The humid sea air leads to a thicker layer of flor, resulting in a wine that is even paler and lighter, often with a distinctive salty, sea-spray "tang."

3. Oloroso

"Oloroso" means "fragrant." These wines are aged without flor, exposing them to oxygen. They are dark, nutty, and full-bodied, with flavours of toffee, leather, spice, and walnuts. With a texture similar to red wine, they pair beautifully with stews, game meat, and mature cheeses.

4. Amontillado

An Amontillado starts its life as a Fino (under flor) but is later refortified to kill the yeast, allowing it to age oxidatively. The result is an amber-colored wine that combines the yeasty, sharp aromas of a Fino with the nutty complexity of an Oloroso.

5. Palo Cortado

The rarest style, Palo Cortado is an elegant enigma. It technically undergoes a similar process to Amontillado (biological followed by oxidative ageing), but typically spends less time under the flor. Connoisseurs say it has the aromatic finesse of an Amontillado but the body and structure of an Oloroso.

Next time you are at a bar in Andalusia, don't just ask for a glass of wine—order a chilled copa of Fino or a glass of Oloroso with your lunch. You’ll be tasting centuries of tradition in a single sip.

In the bustling heart of Madrid, tucked away in the historic Austrias district, stands a culinary monument that has outlasted empires, wars, and revolutions. Sobrino de Botín, widely known simply as Botín, celebrated a monumental milestone in 2025: its 300th anniversary. Founded in 1725 by French cook Jean Botín, this legendary establishment holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the world, a title it wears with quiet dignity and the aroma of roast pork.

The Soul of the Kitchen

While the restaurant has evolved since its early days as an inn where travellers would cook their own meat, one thing has remained constant: the fire. The true heart of Botín is its original wood-fired oven, which has been in continuous use since the restaurant opened three centuries ago.

Considered the "soul" of the establishment, this oven has cooked countless meals and witnessed the passage of history. Since 1930, the stewardship of this flame has belonged to the González family, who have meticulously preserved the venue's authenticity and traditions.

A Menu Written in History

Botín’s cuisine is a tribute to classic Castilian gastronomy, resisting modern fads in favour of timeless flavours. The undisputed star of the menu is the cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig). Sourced from Segovia, the piglets are slow-roasted in that centuries-old oven until the skin is shatteringly crisp while the meat remains impossibly tender. This dish is not just food; it is a piece of literary history, famously immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in his novel The Sun Also Rises, where he declared it the best suckling pig in the world.

Beyond the pig, the menu features other stalwarts of Spanish cuisine. The lechazo (roast baby lamb) is prepared with equal care in the same wood-fired oven. Diners also flock for the garlic soup with egg, callos a la madrileña (a spicy tripe stew), and delicate seafood options like baby squid in its ink or Botín-style clams.

To finish, the house speciality Tarta Botín—a layered confection of meringue, sponge cake, and cream—provides a nostalgic, sweet end to a savoury journey.

Dining in a Museum

Eating at Botín is an immersive experience that transports guests back to the 18th century. The restaurant spans four floors, each oozing with character. The cellar, with its ancient brick walls, offers an intimate, cavernous atmosphere, while dining rooms like the "Castilla" and "Felipe IV" are decorated with traditional tiles and period furniture.

As Botín celebrated 300 years, it stands as more than just a place to eat. It is a living testament to Madrid’s history, a place where the fire never goes out, and where the hospitality remains as warm as it was in 1725.

Red wine contains antioxidants, particularly resveratrol, which has been associated with potential health benefits. However, it's important to note that any potential benefits are likely only seen with moderate consumption, meaning one glass per day for women and up to two glasses per day for men.

Moderate consumption of red wine has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, and improved cognitive function. However, excessive consumption can lead to negative health consequences, such as liver disease, high blood pressure, and addiction.

It's also important to note that while red wine does contain antioxidants, these can also be found in other foods such as berries, nuts, and dark chocolate. So, while moderate red wine consumption can be a part of a healthy diet, it's not necessary to consume red wine to obtain the benefits of antioxidants.

Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes and in red wine and is conjectured to be a partial explanation for the French paradox, the puzzling fact that people in France enjoy a high-fat diet yet suffer less heart disease than Americans.

David Sinclair is a renowned Harvard geneticist who has done extensive research on ageing and longevity. He has suggested that antioxidants are essential for maintaining good health and longevity. According to Sinclair, antioxidants help combat oxidative stress, which is a major cause of ageing and age-related diseases.

However, Sinclair has also cautioned against relying solely on antioxidant supplements to obtain these benefits. He believes that the best way to get antioxidants is through a healthy and varied diet, which includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-rich foods. In addition, Sinclair suggests that intermittent fasting and other forms of calorie restriction can help activate the body's natural antioxidant defences and promote longevity.

As Spain continues to solidify its reputation as a global gastronomic powerhouse, the results of the 2025 World Cheese Awards have given expats and locals alike a new reason to celebrate. Held for the first time in Switzerland, the "Oscars of the Cheese World" saw Spanish cheesemakers defy the home-turf advantage of the Swiss to bring home a staggering haul of medals.

For the readership of Eye on Spain, who know that a good meal starts with the best local ingredients, here is the breakdown of Spain’s big wins and what to look for at your local charcutería.

The "Super Gold" Elite

Out of over 5,000 entries from 46 countries, only 110 cheeses were awarded the prestigious Super Gold—the highest possible distinction. Spain claimed an impressive 20 of these spots.

Notable winners included:

The Most Decorated: Quesos El Bosqueño

If you are looking for a brand that consistently delivers, look no further than Quesos El Bosqueño from the Sierra de Grazalema (Cádiz). They became the most-awarded Spanish dairy of the 2025 competition, bagging 20 medals in total. Their experimental infusions—such as sheep cheese cured in aged rum and goat cheese with Oloroso sherry wine—continue to push the boundaries of traditional Spanish cheesemaking.

A New Honor: The “Es La Leche” Award

The 2025 awards introduced a new category celebrating the foundation of all great cheese: the milk. The inaugural Es La Leche Award was presented to Galician producer Airas Moniz. This award recognises their commitment to sustainable herding and the exceptional quality of the milk from their Jersey cows, highlighting the move toward eco-conscious farming in Spain.

Beyond the Super Golds, several other Spanish staples performed brilliantly:

Mahón-Menorca DOP: This Menorcan classic picked up 10 medals across its various producers, proving its consistency.

Blue Cheeses: For fans of the "stinky stuff," keep an eye out for Azul de Bunker (Aragón) and the famous Valdeón blue from Queserías Picos de Europa, both of which took home Gold.

Looking Ahead: The Awards are Coming to Spain!

While the Swiss dominated the top podium this year, the tide may turn in 2026. The World Cheese Awards Super Jury announced that the next edition of the competition will be held in Córdoba, Andalusia.

For those living in or visiting Spain, this is the perfect excuse to explore the "Cheese Routes" of the peninsula. Whether it’s the smoky Idiazabal of the north or the creamy Torta del Casar of the west, Spain’s cheese scene has never been more vibrant—or more globally recognised.

** Pro Tip for Expats: Many of these award-winning cheeses can be found in the gourmet sections of El Corte Inglés or specialised local queserías. Look for the World Cheese Awards seal on the packaging to ensure you're tasting a world champion!

Almeria, in sunny Spanish Andalucia, was ranked the brightest city for a break in the winter sun.

Spain has once again cemented its reputation as the global leader in high-quality olive oil production. In the newly released 2025 Evooleum Awards—the prestigious international contest dedicated to finding the world’s best Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOO)—Spanish producers have secured an impressive five out of the top ten spots.

The results serve as a powerful testament to the country's dedication to agricultural excellence, with 64 of the list's "Top 100" hailing from Spain.

The Spanish Champions

The 2025 edition of the Evooleum Guide, now in its tenth year, showcased a variety of flavours and regions, but Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha proved particularly strong. The five Spanish oils that cracked the elite top ten include:

Valdenvero Hojiblanco (Ciudad Real): Ranking third globally, this oil is celebrated for its fascinating tasting notes of artichoke and cut grass. The brand also took home accolades for Best Female Producer and Best Olive Mill Master.

Knolive Epicure (Córdoba): A fruity and aromatic blend of Hojiblanca and Picuda varieties.

Señorío De Camarasa (Jaén): A Picual oil distinguished by unique nuances of fresh tomato and banana.

Parqueoliva Serie Oro (Córdoba): A green, fruit-forward Picuda and Hojiblanca blend known for its slightly spicy finish.

Rincón De La Subbética (Córdoba): An Hojiblanca oil praised for its citrus and herbal profile.

A Tradition of Excellence

Spain's dominance in the sector is no accident. The country is the world's largest producer of olive oil, represented in the guide by 67 different brands. This success is underpinned by rigorous quality control and advanced extraction methods that ensure low acidity and high polyphenol content.

Furthermore, Spain’s multiple Protected Designations of Origin (DOP) systems guarantee authenticity and traceability, while a growing focus on organic and sustainable farming has strengthened the country's competitiveness in demanding international markets.

The "Michelin Guide" of Olive Oil

Often regarded as the most influential judging event in the sector, the Evooleum Guide is distributed annually to 2,000 Michelin-starred restaurants and entries on "The World's 50 Best Restaurants" list.

This year’s edition features a prologue by Chef Jordi Cruz of the three-Michelin-starred ABaC Restaurant in Barcelona, as well as healthy recipes from Chef Rodrigo de la Calle of El Invernadero. Beyond the rankings, the guide serves as a comprehensive resource for culinary professionals, covering topics from health and food pairings to olive oil tourism.

With half of the top ten titles and a majority of the top 100, the 2025 awards confirm that when it comes to "liquid gold," Spain remains the gold standard

The Monumental Nativity scene in Xátiva has been declared the largest in Spain. When Christmas arrives, this Valencian city really takes the tradition to another level.

Each year the ‘Monumental Nativity’ grows a little more to show and interpret all the scenes from the Birth of the Messiah. It covers an area of 1600m2, it is approximately 70m long and 20m wide. It is already open and will be closing on 7th January.

It is such a wonderful creation and even if you are not particularly religious it is still a worthy way to spend the afternoon or the evening. If you have children in the family they are sure to love it. This unique spectacle in Spain has become a tourist attraction of the first order bringing tens of thousands of visitors every year.

However, if you do decide to visit there is some important information about this particular Nativity scene that makes it rather special, and you should know:

• Ecological: Throughout the year, City Council workers collect materials that will later be used to assemble the nativity scene. In addition, some of the tools used are of an ethnological character and are yielded by the locals to build the necessary scenes.

• Live animals: One of the great attractions is that in the scene there are live animals: ducks, geese, bulls, sheep, donkeys and turkeys among others. These animals are under veterinary control that care, at all times, for their welfare.

• Solidarity: The fruits and vegetables used and which are usually donated by local businesses are later donated on to charities that work with the needy in the local area. Visitors also throw coins in the fountains and once the event is over, all is collected and allocated to local NGOs.

• Falleros Artists: The majority of the figures are life-size and have been elaborated by traditional Fallas artists, making this nativity scene a genuinely Valencian one. At nightfall, the nativity acquires a special magic with bespoke lighting throughout.

If you happen to be in or near Xativa this Christmas, visiting the nativity scene is really a must.

Spain's Christmas lottery, affectionately known as "El Gordo" (The Fat One), is one of the world's oldest and most massive lottery draws. Established in 1812, this lottery is not only a significant part of Spanish Christmas traditions but also a major source of excitement due to its enormous prize pool. The draw takes place annually on December 22 (next Monday!), and it captivates the entire nation.

How It Works

1. Ticket Structure

Billetes and Décimos: The El Gordo tickets are divided into "billetes" and "décimos." A full ticket, called a "billete," is quite expensive and costs €200. However, most participants opt to purchase a portion of a ticket, known as a "décimo," which costs €20. Each billete is divided into 10 décimos to make it more affordable.

Numbers and Series: Each billete is printed with a unique five-digit number ranging from 00000 to 99999. To increase the odds and diversity, each number is printed multiple times in different "series." For instance, a specific number like 12345 might exist in numerous series, each treated as a separate ticket.

2. Purchasing Tickets

Tickets are sold throughout Spain at designated lottery retailers, called "administraciones de lotería," and online. Offices and organisations, including clubs and charities, often buy large quantities of tickets for resale.

3. The Draw

The much-anticipated draw occurs on December 22nd, watched by millions on television and online. The event is orchestrated by schoolchildren from the San Ildefonso school in Madrid. They sing the numbers and corresponding prizes from two large tumblers, maintaining tradition and adding to the event's ceremonial feel.

Potential Prizes

The total prize pool for El Gordo is mind-boggling, often exceeding €2 billion, with many tiers of prizes to distribute.

1. El Gordo (First Prize)

The grand prize, or El Gordo, awards €4 million to a billete (or €400,000 per décimo). If a ticket holder has one décimo, they would receive €400,000 before taxes.

2. Second Prize

The second prize grants €1.25 million for a billete (€125,000 per décimo).

3. Third Prize

The third prize awards €500,000 to a billete, translating to €50,000 per décimo.

4. Fourth Prizes

There are two fourth prizes, each awarding €200,000 for a billete (€20,000 per décimo).

5. Fifth Prizes

The draw includes eight fifth prizes, each worth €60,000 for a billete (€6,000 per décimo).

6. Smaller Prizes and "La Pedrea"

Numerous smaller prizes, such as the "La Pedrea" (the shower), award €1,000 per billete (€100 per décimo) for thousands of tickets.

Additional smaller prizes also include refunds for certain numbers, ensuring that many participants win something.

Taxes on Winnings

It's important to note that lottery winnings in Spain over €40,000 are subject to a tax rate of 20%. Therefore, winners of larger prizes will need to account for this deduction when calculating their net winnings.

Spain's Christmas lottery, El Gordo, is a cherished national event, bringing hope, excitement, and tradition together every December. With a generous prize distribution and widespread participation, it remains a staple of Spanish culture and a pivotal moment in the festive calendar. Whether you're a local or a visitor, purchasing a décimo offers a chance to partake in this beloved tradition and potentially change your life with the magic of El Gordo.

So, you still have time to grab a ticket and join the ranks of hopeful participants in Spain's iconic Christmas lottery!

The Anti-Costa: Why Your Next Spanish Trip Should Be to Costa de la Luz

If the phrase "Spanish Costa" conjures images of high-rise hotels, neon-lit strips, and crowded beaches, it is time to reset your expectations. Hidden in plain sight on Andalusia’s Atlantic coast lies the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light).

Stretching 120 miles from the tip of majestic Tarifa (where you can almost touch Africa) to the Portuguese border, this region offers a version of Spain that feels almost lost to time: wild, windswept, and unapologetically authentic.

The Vibe: Wild and Untamed

Unlike its Mediterranean cousins (the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca), the Costa de la Luz faces the open Atlantic. The ocean currents are cooler, the winds are stronger, and the landscape is greener.

This geography has saved it from mass overdevelopment. Instead of concrete sprawls, you’ll find rolling sand dunes, pine forests, and vast stretches of golden sand. It is a favourite holiday spot for Spaniards themselves—a sure sign of quality—where "luxury" means understated heritage hotels rather than all-inclusive resorts.

The Hilltop Gem: Vejer de la Frontera

The region is dotted with pueblos blancos (white villages), but Vejer de la Frontera is the crown jewel. Perched high on a hill, its whitewashed houses glow pink and gold during the legendary sunsets that give the "Coast of Light" its name.

What to do: Wander the labyrinthine alleyways that reflect the town's Moorish past. Start your morning with coffee in the Plaza de España, watching the town wake up to the sound of sparrows in the orange trees.

The landscape: From Vejer, you can look down over the coastal plains. A short hike through the wildflower-filled La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park will take you down to the shore.

The Coast: Surf and Solitude

The beaches here are not for passive sunbed lounging; they are wild, elemental places. Near the fishing town of Conil de la Frontera, you won't find endless rows of umbrellas. Instead, you’ll see surfers scanning the Atlantic rolls and hikers exploring the dunes.

History in the Sand: Keep an eye out for the Tower of Castilnovo on the beach. This solitary stone structure is the last survivor of a fortress destroyed by the tsunami from the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Today, it stands as a dramatic, "Hitchcockian" landmark occupied only by nesting crows.

The Ancient City: Cádiz

Driving north, you reach Cádiz, an ancient city tethered to the mainland by a slender bridge. Often described as looking like a "gold bar" due to the way the sun hits its stone amidst the surrounding blue water, Cádiz claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe.

The city reached its peak in the 18th century through trade with the Americas. This era left a unique architectural legacy: merchant watchtowers.

Where to Stay: For a taste of this history, look for the Hotel Casa de las Cuatro Torres. Built for a merchant in the 1700s, it retains its original watchtowers (once used to spot incoming ships) and features extravagantly high ceilings with exposed timber from old shipwrecks.

Why Go Now?

The Costa de la Luz offers a rare combination in modern European travel: accessibility and authenticity. It is a place where the "nightlife" is a long dinner in a town square rather than a club, and the "attractions" are the light, the wind, and the history beneath your feet.

Spain's Tallest Cathedral

The ranking could be defined as close. In fact, only six meters separate the tower of the New Cathedral of Salamanca from the emblematic Giralda of Seville. With its 110 meters, this construction rises above the sky of the Castilian and Leonese city, allowing it not only to lead the classification of religious temples but also that of any building in this city.

Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, this cathedral used part of the structures of the previous basilica to achieve these amazing dimensions. In fact, the bell tower was built on top of the old tower, rising to this height at the end of the works.

However, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 damaged part of its structure, forcing the deviation caused by the tremor to be tightened and reinforced with a stone embankment, widening what was destined to be a slender tower.

This is a recommended visit if you happen to be travelling through the region, quite a spectacular cathedral.

The launch of the luxury wine train, the 'Al Andalus,' represents more than just a new travel option; it signals a significant commitment by Spain to capitalise on the booming high-end experiential travel market, specifically by linking it to the nation's profound wine culture.

A Moving Piece of History: The 1929 'Al Andalus'

The choice of the 'Al Andalus' train, originally dating back to 1929, is central to the experience. This is not modern luxury, but rather an evocation of the golden age of rail travel. The meticulous restoration focuses on preserving the train’s historical integrity while integrating essential modern comfort. The presence of Art Deco detailing and polished mahogany panelling isn't just decor—it’s a carefully curated environment designed to transport guests into a time of romantic, slower-paced travel where the journey itself was the destination. This 'heritage luxury' niche is highly sought after by affluent travellers looking for authentic experiences that disconnect them from the modern rush. The addition of amenities like queen-size beds and full en-suite bathrooms with showers is the non-negotiable modern concession that transforms the vintage cabin into a true, high-comfort hotel suite on rails.

The Strategic Route: Unlocking Spain's Wine Diversity

The seven-day itinerary from Madrid to Seville is strategically designed to be a condensed masterclass in Spanish terroir and history.

Castilla-La Mancha: The journey begins by passing through the vast plains of this region, which holds the title of the world's largest area under vine. This provides a crucial context for understanding the scale of Spanish winemaking.

Extremadura: A lesser-known but increasingly relevant wine region, offering guests an off-the-beaten-path perspective and opportunities to discover emerging Spanish wine styles.

Andalusia: The route culminates in the south, the spiritual home of Sherry. The inclusion of stops like Cádiz and Seville places guests in the heart of this sun-drenched region, allowing them to fully appreciate the culture behind Spain’s most famous fortified wine.

The excursions—including visits to boutique vineyards and artisan workshops—are key to justifying the premium price point. They ensure the trip is not merely scenic but genuinely educational, allowing guests to meet the producers and understand the history of the regions they traverse.

The culinary offering solidifies 'Al Andalus' as a wine train. The rotating regional menus are crafted to sync with the train’s location, creating a seamless connection between the plate, the glass, and the landscape outside. The sommelier’s role goes beyond service; they are the curator of this edible narrative, selecting wines and Sherries that perfectly complement regional delicacies like Jabugo ham and oxtail stew. This high-level gastronomic integration ensures that food and wine are not simply served, but are the central, binding theme of the entire seven-day cultural immersion.

Starting at €6,600 per person, the train is aimed squarely at the top-tier luxury market, offering an all-inclusive, fully guided, and utterly unique way to experience the cultural and vinous heart of Spain, positioning the 'Al Andalus' as one of Europe's premier railway journeys upon its April 2026 launch.

For decades, the global spotlight on fine dining often rotated between the rich classical traditions of France and the experimental frontiers of New Nordic cuisine. Yet, a quiet culinary revolution has been brewing on the Iberian Peninsula, culminating in Spain’s undeniable ascent to the top of the world's gastronomic charts.

Spain is no longer just a contender—it is the dominant force. The recent results from prestigious rankings like The World's 50 Best Restaurants, where a small country has secured multiple spots in the very top tier (including the number one spot, held by Barcelona’s Disfrutar), confirm what many food lovers already knew: Spain is, arguably, the "foodiest" country in Europe.

How did this happen? The country's dominance is not a fleeting trend, but rather a "perfect storm" fueled by a powerful combination of visionary innovation, unwavering reverence for its world-class ingredients, and an intensely democratic food culture.

1. The Avant-Garde Legacy: From El Bulli to Disfrutar

The foundation of modern Spanish culinary dominance was poured decades ago. In the 1970s, the Nueva Cocina Vasca movement, spearheaded by chefs like Juan Mari Arzak and Pedro Subijana, championed a fusion of traditional Basque cooking with creativity and modern flair, putting Spain on the haute cuisine map.

This set the stage for the global phenomenon of Ferrán Adrià's El Bulli. Until its closure in 2011, El Bulli shattered the rules of cooking, pioneering techniques like spherification and foams that are now standard in high-end kitchens worldwide.

The current world champion, Disfrutar in Barcelona, is a direct heir to this legacy. Led by El Bulli veterans Oriol Castro, Mateu Casañas, and Eduard Xatruch, Disfrutar continues to push the boundaries, serving tasting menus of over 30 dishes that seamlessly blend culinary art and science. As Chef Ángel León of the three-star Aponiente notes, Spanish chefs "are veterans," not positioning themselves according to passing fads.

The Iconic Dishes That Defined Modern Cuisine

The global impact of Spanish cuisine can be measured not just in awards, but in the specific creations that became worldwide sensations and inspirations:

The Liquid Olive (El Bulli, Ferrán Adrià): The single most iconic dish of the molecular gastronomy era. This perfect, jewel-like sphere of olive juice, coated in a delicate membrane through the process of spherification, burst on the palate with the intense, pure flavor of an olive. It was a revolutionary moment that demonstrated the potential of culinary science to manipulate texture and surprise the diner.

Marinas / Plankton Creations (Aponiente, Ángel León): Known as the "Chef of the Sea," Ángel León made his name by fearlessly exploring the ocean's depths. His signature ingredient is marine plankton, which he introduced to haute cuisine. Dishes like his Plankton Rice give a deep, ethereal taste of the sea, highlighting his work in creating a sustainable, blue gastronomy.

Spherified Caviar and Foams (Disfrutar, Castro, Casañas, Xatruch): Disfrutar continues the avant-garde tradition, showcasing dishes that are visual and textural illusions. Examples include a spectacular Panchino Bun oozing Beluga caviar from a siphon, and a Tartine of Foie Gras garnished with bubbles of spherified corn. These dishes show that the core techniques of the Spanish revolution are still fertile ground for new and playful creations.

Whole Grilled Turbot (Elkano, Aitor Arregui): While seemingly simple, the mastery of the grill at Basque restaurants like Elkano is a profound culinary statement. The restaurant's signature dish is the Whole Grilled Turbot, cooked over coals on the bone, basted with an "injerto" (a mix of oil, vinegar, and the fish's own gelatin). The focus is not on invention, but on elevating the product to its absolute highest expression—a deceptive simplicity that requires immense skill.

2. The Power of Product and Place

While the avant-garde grabs the headlines, the soul of Spanish cuisine remains its unshakeable commitment to the highest quality, most diverse ingredients.

Spain’s incredible geographical diversity—with over 52 provinces—results in a vast pantry, from the legendary red tuna of Andalucía to the baby tear-shaped peas of Basque Country and the cave-aged blue cheeses of Asturias. This product-first philosophy is the bedrock of even the most acclaimed restaurants.

Take Asador Etxebarri (ranked No. 2 globally), a temple to grilling that elevates simple ingredients like prawns and turbot through a mastery of flame. Similarly, Elkano in Getaria, renowned for its whole grilled turbot, exemplifies the sophistication of tradition. As one chef described it, the country’s success is a balancing act: "Haute cuisine restaurants like Disfrutar apply all the creativity imaginable," while traditional spots like Etxebarri and Elkano are "also very sophisticated in their own way."

3. The High-Low Revolution

Perhaps the most compelling argument for Spain as the "foodiest" country is the accessibility and quality of its everyday dining. Unlike fine-dining scenes in some other nations, Spain’s culinary excellence is not restricted to expensive tablecloth restaurants.

The country's food scene is a joyful blend of high-end experiences and affordable tapas bars. In Spain, the local culture goes hand-in-hand with food. Techniques pioneered by Adrià—like foams or spherifications—are often found in the small bites of a neighbourhood pintxo or tapas bar.

As Chef León put it, "The way of eating in Spain is a privilege. We have both fine dining restaurants and affordable tapas, not to mention excellent mid-range restaurants... that you can't find in other countries." Even the Michelin Guide recommends hundreds of Spanish restaurants where one can enjoy a meal for less than 40 euros.

This vibrant, pervasive quality is what makes Spain a food tourist destination—a remarkable 28% of the 84 million international tourists who visited in 2023 came specifically to eat.

From the dazzling molecular creations of Barcelona to the smoky perfection of a Basque grill, Spain is a country that reveres its past while fearlessly embracing its future. By balancing wild innovation with deep, regional tradition and making quality food a part of daily life, Spain has stopped whispering and is now roaring its culinary prowess for the world to hear.

The bustling tapas bars of Murcia, a sun-drenched region in southeastern Spain, offer a dazzling array of small bites, but few are as iconic and beloved as the "Marinera." This seemingly simple tapa, a perfect marriage of crisp bread, creamy salad, and a salty anchovy, tells a story of the region's culinary heritage, where the bounty of the Mediterranean Sea meets the richness of the huerta (fertile agricultural land).

The exact origin of the Marinera is shrouded in the mists of time, but its components suggest a long-standing culinary tradition. The base, often a "rosca" (a ring-shaped breadstick) or a simple slice of baguette, speaks to the Spanish love affair with bread. The heart of the Marinera, the ensaladilla rusa (Russian salad), is a staple across Spain, a testament to its widespread popularity since its introduction in the 19th century. But it's the anchovy, often a local salazón (salt-cured fish), that firmly anchors the Marinera to Murcia's coastal identity.

Legend has it that the Marinera evolved from the humble necessity of utilising available ingredients. Fishermen and farmers, seeking a quick and satisfying bite, combined the ever-present bread with a spoonful of the popular Russian salad and topped it with a prized anchovy. The name "Marinera," meaning "seawoman" or "mariner," further reinforces its connection to the sea and the coastal communities that likely perfected this delightful combination.

Over time, what began as a practical snack evolved into a culinary institution. Today, no visit to Murcia is complete without indulging in a Marinera, often paired with a refreshing "caña" (small glass of beer) or a crisp local wine. It's a tapa that embodies the spirit of Murcian cuisine: fresh, flavorful, and deeply satisfying.

Crafting Your Own Marinera: A Taste of Murcia at Home

While enjoying a Marinera in its native setting is an experience, recreating this Murcian classic at home is surprisingly straightforward. The beauty lies in the quality of the ingredients and the simplicity of its assembly.

The Three Pillars of a Perfect Marinera:

The Base: Traditionally, a "rosca" is used – a light, crunchy, ring-shaped breadstick. If you can't find roscas, a good-quality baguette or even plain breadsticks will suffice. The key is a crisp base that can support the salad without becoming soggy.
Ensaladilla Rusa (Russian Salad): This creamy potato salad is the heart of the Marinera. While variations exist, the classic Murcian ensaladilla is typically made with potatoes, carrots, peas, and mayonnaise.
The Anchovy: This is where the Marinera gets its distinctive salty kick. High-quality anchovies, preferably from the Cantabrian Sea or local Murcian salazones, are essential. Look for plump, firm fillets packed in olive oil.

Recipe: Authentic Murcian Marinera
Yields: 12-15 tapas Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15-20 minutes
Ingredients:
For the Ensaladilla Rusa:
2 large potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2-inch cubes
1 large carrot, peeled and diced into small cubes
1/2 cup fresh or frozen peas
1/2 cup good-quality mayonnaise (homemade is ideal, but store-bought is fine)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Optional: 1 hard-boiled egg, finely chopped; 1/4 cup canned tuna in olive oil, drained and flaked.

For Assembly:
1 package of "roscas" (Murcian ring-shaped breadsticks) or 1 baguette, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
1 jar (about 12-15 fillets) high-quality anchovies in olive oil, drained
Optional garnish: A sprig of fresh parsley or a slice of pimiento (roasted red pepper).

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Ensaladilla Rusa:
Cook the vegetables: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the diced potatoes and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until fork-tender but not mushy.
Add carrots and peas: During the last 5 minutes of cooking the potatoes, add the diced carrots and peas to the pot. Cook until all vegetables are tender.
Drain and cool: Drain the vegetables thoroughly and spread them out on a plate to cool completely. This is crucial; warm vegetables will break down the mayonnaise.
Combine and season: Once the vegetables are cool, transfer them to a medium bowl. Gently fold in the mayonnaise.
If using: Add the chopped hard-boiled egg and flaked tuna now.
Taste and season: Add salt and pepper to taste. Be mindful of the salt, as the anchovy will add more salinity. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavours to meld.

2. Assemble the Marineras:
Prepare your base: Arrange the roscas or baguette slices on a serving platter.
Spoon the ensaladilla: Take a generous spoonful of the chilled ensaladilla rusa and place it on top of each rosca or baguette slice. Form a small mound.
Top with anchovy: Carefully place one drained anchovy fillet on top of the ensaladilla, curving it slightly to fit the shape of the tapa.
Garnish (optional): If desired, add a tiny sprig of fresh parsley or a small piece of roasted red pepper for colour and a touch of freshness.

Serving Suggestion:
Serve your homemade Marineras immediately, ideally with a cold beer, a glass of chilled white wine, or a local Murcian vermouth. The contrast of the crunchy base, creamy salad, and salty anchovy is what makes this tapa so utterly irresistible.
The Murcian Marinera is more than just a snack; it's a culinary emblem, a perfect representation of a region that cherishes its simple, yet profoundly delicious, gastronomic traditions. Enjoy!

The Spanish capital, Madrid, is taking a major step into the future of urban mobility with the launch of its first-ever fully autonomous bus pilot project. Since September 15, an electric minibus manufactured and integrated in Spain has been circulating in the city's Casa de Campo park, offering passengers a glimpse of a driverless public transport system.

The test, a collaboration between the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) and the Automotive Technology Centre of Galicia (CTAG), is a key part of Madrid's European Mobility Week activities and is set to run until October 24.

The Pilot Program: Free, Electric, and Autonomous
The vehicle being tested is a small, 100% electric minibus with a capacity for 12 passengers. It operates on a free, circular route covering 1.8 kilometres with six stops, running from Monday to Friday between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. The primary goal is to assess the performance of the vehicle's cutting-edge systems under real, open traffic conditions, navigating alongside cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles.

Despite its driverless nature, a safety operator is always on board. This is not only a regulatory requirement in Spain but also a safeguard, allowing an operator to monitor the journey and intervene in case of emergency, such as opening doors or manually braking.

A Made-in-Spain Brain
While autonomous vehicle components often come from various international suppliers, this project proudly features Spanish expertise. The assembly, software, and systems integration—the "brain" of the vehicle—were all developed by CTAG in Galicia.

The minibus operates at a high level of autonomy, Level 4, meaning it can handle nearly all driving situations independently. It uses an advanced array of sensors, cameras, and GPS to navigate, recognising:

Roads and traffic lights.

Cyclists and pedestrians.

Any object, from a bicycle to an animal, reacts accordingly to avoid collisions.

EMT officials have expressed enthusiasm for the vehicle's dynamic behaviour, noting that the technology is "very well integrated" and does not behave "erratically or robotically."

The Future of Urban Mobility
This pilot goes beyond a simple technological demonstration. It serves as an exploration of how autonomous vehicles can complement and enhance existing public transport networks. While the lack of professional drivers is a growing problem in many parts of Europe, Madrid's focus is on improving safety and efficiency.

Experts believe these small, autonomous shuttles won't replace the large 12-meter city buses, but rather serve as a solution for specific public transport challenges. They are perfectly suited for:

Short-distance routes (1-5 km).

Operation in constrained areas like university campuses, industrial parks, or city centres, where large vehicles are impractical.

With cities across Europe, including Paris and Stockholm, also experimenting with autonomous mobility, the results of Madrid’s pilot will be crucial in determining the path forward. It appears the journey towards a smarter, more efficient public transport future is well underway.

Cameras: Spain's Invisible Red-Light Enforcers

Spain is increasingly adopting a new type of 'invisible camera' known as 'foto-rojo' to automatically penalise drivers who run red lights. These systems are designed to be discreet, making them difficult for drivers to spot, and are part of a broader effort to improve urban road safety.

How They Work

These cameras are typically installed on poles or traffic light posts and are not designed to be conspicuous. Their presence is generally indicated by a vertical sign located 20-25 meters before the intersection. The system operates 24/7 and is only activated when the traffic light is red.

When a vehicle crosses the white stop line on a red light, the camera takes two photographs: one before the car enters the intersection and a second one after it has crossed. These images, along with the vehicle's license plate and other relevant data, are sent to a server. A mobility agent then reviews the case to verify the infraction.

Penalties and Legal Implications

If a red-light violation is confirmed, the driver faces a fine of 200 euros, which can be reduced by 50% if paid within the voluntary period. The offence also results in a deduction of 4 points from the driver's license. The citation is typically mailed to the vehicle owner, who is responsible for providing the identity of the driver at the time of the offence.

While these fines are automated, they can be appealed. According to legal experts, a significant number of fines are overturned by the courts due to procedural errors, technical deficiencies with the cameras, or a lack of solid evidence. Drivers can appeal a fine if the images are of poor quality, if the system's calibration is not up to date, or if the fine contains formal defects.

Location and Impact on Safety

These cameras are being installed by municipalities to reduce accidents in high-risk urban intersections, particularly those with a history of crashes involving pedestrians. They are already active in several major cities across Spain, including:

Madrid

Barcelona

Bilbao

Zaragoza

Valencia

Seville

The use of 'foto-rojo' systems is a key measure in Spain's road safety strategy, particularly in urban areas where distracted driving and a failure to follow traffic signals are significant factors in accidents. By automating the enforcement of red-light violations, authorities aim to reduce reckless behaviour and make city streets safer for all road users.
