Free tapas in Jaen
24 February 2013 @ 11:58

Jaen is one of a select few provinces in Spain where you get a free tapa when you order a drink.  You usually have to order a beer or wine to qualify for a free tapa.  You won't always get it if you order a soft drink, but you usually will if you order a mosto (grape juice).

Before moving to Spain (Malaga) full time, I had previously spent a lot of time in Jaen province, so I got used to not having to pay for tapas.  I still find it weird having to pay for tapas in Malaga, even after living here for 4 years.!

I still manage to get up to Jaen province two or three times per year, most recently at Christmas and it never ceases to amaze me some of the tapas you get with a €1.60 glass of wine or cana.

We even found a bar in my wife's pueblo where we actually got 2 free tapas with a drink.  The first tapa was only a plate of crisps or some olives which we would eat while we waited for our proper tapas to arrive.  This was a new bar that had only been opened a few months and this place was the busiest bar in the town.  It's not hard to work out why.

We went to the nearest big town next to my wife's pueblo one night and ended up in an absolutely packed bar.  One of the tapas we got was a massive burger.  Again, the cost of a cana and the burger was €1.60.  After 3 drinks/tapas each we were full.

Here are some pics of some of the tapas I enjoyed over Xmas.

Still the norm in Granada province. Granada capital is exceptional.
