Lorcha Area Description

Lorcha / l'Orxa is the last village on the Serpis River as it flows through the province of Alicante on its way to Gandía. Its ancient name, Perputxent, refers to the valley where the village is located. When the Moors were removed, the village passed into the hands of the Order of the Knights Templars who governed and extended Lorcha castle. Their economy was destroyed and population sadly diminished. Their economy now depends on agriculture, oil and almonds and a paper mill provides jobs for most of the population.
