Salvador Dali: Son of Girona

Body Salvador Dali is best known for his incredible surrealist work. From landscapes to portraits and true works of surrealism, Dali's bizarre concoctions of the real and the abstract are well known across the world - which is more than enough reason for his homeland to be proud of him.

Salvador DaliDali was born in Figueres, the capital city of the Alt Emporda district in the province of Girona, which is in Catalonia, Spain. Figueres is certainly the place to go if you want to explore Dali's life and work as it houses the fascinating Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dali, which is a very large museum dedicated solely to the artist and his work.

Admirers of Dali's work can easily spend several days exploring the city and its attractions, and even spot a few landscapes that feature in his incredible works of art, such as the Landscape Near Figueres, which was created in 1910 when the painter was just six years old.

Of course, there's plenty more to do in Figueres and the whole Girona region, but a visit to the area simply isn't complete without paying homage to one of its most famous sons.

Salvador Dali is, after all, credited with having a massive influence on the impressionist and surrealist scene in the art world, which is still appearing in the works of contemporary painters even today. His work is displayed in galleries around the world and is very much sought-after for private collections as well as free public display.

Born in 1904, Dali was encouraged to develop his artistic skills by his mother, who continued to support him in spite of a more negative reaction from his father. He attended drawing school and began painting properly on a regular basis.

When he was 16, he discovered what modern painting entailed and became intrigued by it during a summer vacation with the family of a local artist by the name of Ramon Pichot. A year later, Dali's father placed his son's charcoal drawings on exhibition in the family home, and a proper, public exhibition followed soon after in 1919, when the Municipal Theatre in Figueres displayed his work for the first time.

If you'd love to explore more about Salvador Dali's life, it's simple to get there via Girona airport car rental and experience the world of the famous surrealist for yourself. What's more, Figueres and surrounding areas make for the perfect holiday destination, so you can rest assured there'll be plenty else to see and do when you're not exploring Dali's world!
