Hi Laury,

I was employed and so all my tax etc was done by the wages department.  And I never bought a house so I was literally only transferring enough per month for rent and to live on. I was never fully resident in Spain as I didn't spend 6 months a year there and never paid tax to Spain and I'm not sure how it works in the EU as to paying the difference in Tax levels.

I did commute from Alicante though and always found the Easyjet to Luton route the cheapest if you can book ahead at least a few weeks.

Hi Laury,  I was living in Spain and working in the Oil Industry in the UK.  Despite what everybody might think there was no tax dodge and I had to pay full UK Tax and National Insurance.  This did however give me full access to Spanish National Health Service for me and my dependants (cant remember if I had to use 106 or 109 form).

I was paid into my UK bank and transferred it monthly at a cost of £25 and if the 1st fell on a weekend it could take until the 7th to get to Spain - but this was Barclays so I'm sure it could be done cheaper and quicker.

Hope this helps.

I couldn't agree more with J&N - its just jealousy of the life they think you will have and that you have the balls to do it.

I work in the North Sea in the Oil industry and have worked a 2 and 2 rota for the last 2 years while my girlfriend lived there permanently.  The only thing I would say is that if your husband is paid in £'s the exchange rate is not great at the moment.

We are heading back to the UK very shortly due to a family illness but I am fully expecting plenty of people to give us the 'So it didnt work out....' with a sly smirk.

Good luck to you though.

Headghogg - that is a cracking idea!  For people on both sides of the fence.

I luckily think I will only lose about 600 Euros.  They have 1700 as deposit, apparentely by law I have to pay one months rent leaving 850.  I admit there may be around 200 Euros of Bills so I think about 600ish Euros.

In the grand scheme of things its not a lot i know but still not nice when in my previous 2 rentals in Spain I never had so much as a crossed word with my agent / landlord and got all my deposits back in full.  As renters we really make a huge effort to keep the place nice (not easy sometimes with a young baby and a large dog).
