Actually the Mazarron that   DonLochnagar   was referring to is in Costa Calida

As he mentions it is a good place to invest what with Paramount coming and the new international airport (Corvera), what's more it's very diverse both landscape wise (two seas, historic buildings, city life, country life, village life, golf complexes, town life, nature reserves) and living wise (i.e extremely Spanish in many parts but large ex-pat communties in other parts).

That said not all areas across the province offer property that cheap.

The real bargains in the province are the repossesions or golf complex villas and apartments especially on the former Polaris World complexes

Latbus is the latest company to seek bankruptcy protection.

Until the government finances are sorted out, the list will grow longer.  It's morally wrong the number of companies that they have already or are in the process of taking down due to their non/late payment of debt.  So many companies are scared to speak out because they don't want enermies on the inside and fear they won't get contracts awarded in the future.  It's time they all turned their heads round the right way.  This problem must be dealt with head-on as not only is it impacting sub-contractors further down the food chain, it impacts folks on the ground who can't pay their taxes since the government either directly/indirectly hasn't paid them for work done...........

Only if time is no object and you discount the cost of fuel for the (long) extra jouney

Plus generally speaking, you'd need to pay for an overnight hotel and arrive well knackered after two long days driving across to Southern Spain.

I'd recommend the Portsmouth to Santander route, we've done it many times and always found it much more enjoyable than flying.  Price wise, it can be expensive depending on the time of the year......but as you say with flight prices going up and taking into account car hire and parking it's becoming more comparable, especially if you're taking things out (as you mention below).  It's also great if on the return journey you want to stock up on lots of local produce

For me Pont Aven is the Cruise Ferry of choice, I always try to book our trips to coincide with when this vessel is sailing.  There's tons to do onboard and if you fancy a taste of luxury you can book Commodore Class Cabins with balcony (we always do).

What time of year are you thinking of travelling?  From end September to end March tends to be cheapest with prices from £300-400 for a return sailing with a basic cabins up to £850-£900 for a return sailing with Commodore Class Cabins (which include a balcony). Brittany Ferries have pictures of the various types of accomodation on their website.
