Driver Caught Speeding Sues Government

A man caught driving at 260 kilometres per hour on a road in northern Spain is suing the Spanish government for compensation for confiscating his driving license. The 42-year-old man was clocked by police travelling at more than twice the legal speed limit an Audi A8. His driving license was immediately confiscated and he was charged with reckless endangerment. However, he was acquitted of the charges due to a legal loophole and in response to being banned from driving for 13 months the man sued the authorities, requesting 313,454 euros in compensation for the added expenses and time it had cost him to travel to and from work and for the 'moral damage' caused by having his photo published by the media.

Challenge to the New Territorial Plan (POT)

Thirteen municipalities in the province of Malaga have placed formal appeals against the new POT territorial plan proposed by the Junta de Andalucia. The POT is designed to control development in the region until 2018, but it has become known that 13 mayors, representing a population of over 830,000, voiced objections, considering the plan would restrict the development of their municipalities too greatly. Objections have been made by the mayors of Alhaurin de la Torre, Rincon de la Victoria, Benalmadena and Torremolinos on the coast, Alhaurin el Grande, Cartama, Pizarra, Alora and Coin in the Guadalhorce Valley and Casabermeja, Almogia and Totalan, Villages in the Montes de Malaga area. The mayors consider the new POT takes over areas which are their own responsibility.

Storms Affect Easter Processions

Storms affected the province of Malaga during Semana Santa, bringing a covering of white hail in some areas last Thursday (20th March), and floods to parts of the coast especially on the Eastern Costa del Sol. Many basements and garages were flooded and there were several calls to the emergency services, mostly in Malaga city, Fuengirola and Mijas. Several processions in many towns were also affected.

Seville Sees Increase in Divorces of Convenience

Family courts in Seville believe there is a simple explanation for a current wave of divorces taking place across the city, because a similar increase was seen at this time last year. They say many couples are divorcing or separating so that their children can obtain extra points in the school selection process. During the same period last year the courts dealt with over 380 requests for divorce proceedings, of which 206 are now thought to have been 'divorces of convenience'. An increase in the numbers has also been seen this year as the school places are about to be awarded. Last year the Department of Education in the city received hundreds of fraud claims regarding school places, however it seems there is nothing illegal in such behaviour under Spanish law.

Goat Milk Prices Lead to Protests

Malaga Cyclists Prefer Inland Roads

According to local cyclists, Malaga's roads are some of the most dangerous in Spain. 60% of Malaga cyclists practise the sport two or three times a week, and 20% cycle every day. There are 51 cycling clubs in the province and most prefer inland roads with little traffic such as those leading to Churriana, Cartama, Pizarra and Campillos. However, they complain that most roads in the province are badly marked, with narrow hard shoulders, are narrow, unkempt and strewn with rubbish, crossroads are unsafe, there are too many raised pedestrian crossings and, above all, there are insufficient cycling lanes. Forty per cent of the cyclists who took part in the survey claimed to have had an accident while cycling, although statistics from Spain's traffic department (DGT) show that no cyclists were killed on Malaga's roads during 2007.
