TV Ads to be Reduced
The Spanish national television service TVE have been ordered by the government to progressively reduce the amount of advertising on their programmes from the present 12 minutes to 9 minutes per hour by 2010.
Law Suit Dropped after Rule Change
The beauty queen who was stripped of her Miss Cantabria title and banned from the Miss Spain 2006 contest because she was found to have a child has withdrawn her court case against the organisers after they announced the decision to change the rules to allow mothers to compete. The 2008 contest went ahead with two young mothers in the line-up and organisers of Miss World and Miss Universe contests are considering similar rule changes.
Granada – Sierra Nevada Ski Slopes
The Junta de Andalucia is investing 6 million euros in improving the ski slopes, adding a new ski-lift, and increasing the hotel accommodation by 276 places ready for the next winter ski season.
Solar Power in Malaga Province
The first photovoltaic generating plant in Malaga province was opened this week in Campillos. The plant, which takes up the area of about eight football pitches, consists of 1224 mobile duo-positional structures of 12,150 modules to capture the sun’s rays, producing 1.8 megawatts, enough to power 3,000 houses. This installation involved 14 million euros of investment and others will soon be operational in the province.
Land Prices in Malaga
While the Spanish average land price has fallen almost 8% since a year ago the prices in Malaga province have risen by almost 2% in the same period. There were also small increases in Cadiz and Sevilla provinces.
Mains Gas in Estepona
Mains gas is to be available in Estepona this summer. The company doing the work, Gas Natural, intends to supply 80% of all towns in Malaga province with above 10,000 inhabitants by 2013.
New Air Links
Ryanair have announced that they will be operating daily flights from Malaga to Birmingham from October 26th.
Air Nostrum announced that they will operate weekly flights from their base at Logrono to Malaga from July 27th to September 7th. This will permit connections with their 22 national destinations and 40 international and 28 inter-continental routes.
Dia de San Juan
Monday June 23rd is the day of St. Juan when the start of summer is celebrated in the villages and on the beaches of Malaga in the evening with bonfires, fireworks, beach parties and other events, including a free concert on the beach at La Malagueta featuring the singer Merche.
Terral Festival in Malaga
The Terral Festival takes place in the Cervantes theatre in Malaga from June 25th until July 21st. Among artistes taking part are James Blunt, Lou Reed and Macy Grey.
Malaga Flamenco
A new version of the show “Malaga Flamenco Pasion” can be seen at the Alameda theatre in Malaga every Monday evening until September 29th at 7.00 pm.
Bob Dylan on Tour in Spain
Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan is on tour in Spain this summer, performing in Andorra, Pamplona and Jaen among others; also he will be in concert in Jerez on July 8th.
Chuck Berry to Perform in Andalucia
82 year old Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Chuck Berry is to play at the Cordoba guitar festival between July 4th and July 18th. He will also perform in Estepona at a concert in the bullring on July 26th.
Second Hand Book Fair
A second hand book fair takes place at the Plaza la Nogalera in Torremolinos from June 27th at 8.00 pm until July 20th.
Football
Malaga’s final match 2-1 win against Tenerife kept them in second place to ensure promotion to the Primera Liga. The club goes up into the top division along with Numancia and Sporting Gijon.
