EC Rules May Lead to Tax Rebates
Britons and other EC nationals who paid taxes on property sold before rule changes last year may be due tax rebates of up to 11,000 pounds as they were taxed at higher rates than Spanish nationals, in contravention to EC laws. A legal firm claims that around 4,500 Britons and thousands of others should be able to claim rebates at a total cost of about 50 million pounds to the Spanish government.
New Airline Launched
The giant leisure company, Thomas Cook, has launched a new airline, Thomas Cook Airlines, ready for operation this summer. Its 42 aircraft will fly from eleven bases in the UK to seventy eight holiday destinations. This has come about from the fusion last June of the companies Thomas Cook AG and My Travel Group and will be the second largest air leisure company in the UK. They expect to fly 2.9 million passengers to their holiday destinations this summer.
Hotel Chain to Award Free Stays for Rain Affected Days
The hotel company Iberostar Hotels and Resorts will award free stays to any visitors whose holidays from 9th April to 5th May are affected by rain in Andalucia. Those guests will be able to take their free days in any of the chain’s hotels at any time this year except July and August and the year end.
Zapatero Invested as Spanish Prime Minister
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was invested as Spanish Prime Minister yesterday (11th April) following a second vote in Congress to obtain a simple majority. He becomes the first politician to have won a General Election in Spain who has needed a second vote, where only a simple majority is needed to be elected.
Much Needed Rain Affects Spain
This week's much-needed rainfall is set to continue throughout the weekend in some parts of Spain. The recent rains have caused some minor inconveniences across the country with the fishing fleet in Huelva province being unable to leave port and a number of main roads affected by flooding. Drainage problems in Cordoba saw several of the city's streets partially flooded. The rain also disrupted Sevilla's Feria de Abril celebrations.
Tourist Visits to Granada Increase
The Granada Tourism office has announced that numbers of tourist visits so far this year are up 27% on last year. Over half the visitors were from Spain and the others mainly from EU countries.
Burglar Plays Dead
A thief seen forcing his way into a funeral parlour in Burjassot (Valencia) hid in one of the glass cases where coffins are displayed for mourners to keep vigil when he was disturbed by police arriving at the scene The plan was unsuccessful, as the 'corpse' was visibly breathing and his casual clothes were not of the kind usually chosen by undertakers for their dead clients. The burglar, who has a long police record, has been charged with attempted robbery.
AVE Sparks Interest in Malaga Property
An estate agent at the CIMA property fair in Madrid says that there has been some interest in acquiring a second home in Malaga thanks to the fast AVE rail link between the two cities, in spite of the fact that there are 42% less properties and developments on show this year.
Clinic Fined for Making Female Nurses Wear Skirts
A private clinic in Cadiz has been fined 6,000 euros for making female nurses and health assistants wear skirts in their health centres. The company which owns a chain of health centres in Andalucia has been ordered to pay the fine for requiring their female nurses to wear skirts. Officials considered that the company was infringing equality legislation by insisting on the skirts and removing a productivity bonus payment of 30 euros a month from the nurses who chose to wear trousers.
Islamic World Exhibition in Nerja
An exhibition depicting life in Moorish Spain during the 600 year occupation is currently taking place in Nerja. The event, which is in the Market Exhibition hall until 29th April, shows maps, weaponry, and Islamic art of the period in various displays in order to depict life in Al-Andalus.
Participative Budgeting Project
In a new initiative launched by the Deputy of Environment and Territorial Articulation for Malaga province, inhabitants of the small village of Benalauria in the Serrania de Ronda area will be able to participate in the decision making process about where their money is to be spent. This may be done through opinion polls, surveys, local meetings and representations from interested groups.
Queen Tickets on Sale
Tickets are now on sale for the Rock the Cosmos 2008 tour by Queen. The band, with ex Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers in the lead singing role, will perform in Madrid, Barcelona and Murcia in October. Contract Awarded to Upgrade Costa del Sol
The regional Tourism Department has awarded a 2,300,000 euro contract to a team of architects with a brief to revamp the Costa del Sol. They have been given 18 months to design a project that will help re-launch the Costa on a world wide scale, revitalising tourist areas and improving the quality of the environment. The winning team includes professionals with knowledge of a wide range of fields including town planning, the environment and tourism.
Mediterranean Golf Exhibition, Malaga
There will be a golf exhibition at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos in Malaga from 16th to 19th April. The show is dedicated principally to professionals, green-keepers, club directors etc. The show will highlight the range of golf opportunities on the Costa del Sol.
Coin Cheese Fair
The International Cheese Fair, organised by the Andalucian Cheese Heritage Association, the Rural Development Group and the local town hall, will be held in Coin on 26th (11.00am – 9.00pm) and 27th April (11.00am – 3.00pm). Cheese makers from Andalucia and the rest of Spainwill take part in the fair along with other exhibitors from Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium and Morocco. There will be parades, cheese tasting, guided visits, workshops and a market where all kinds of cheese will be on sale.
New Website for Antequera
As Antequera’s 45,000 population is the most spread out municipality in the province of Malaga, the Ayuntamiento has launched a new website. Now all the Town Hall's administration can be carried out without having to go to the appropriate offices. On www.antequera.es the public can now apply for building works licences, ask for a residence certificate, pay municipal taxes etc., online.

Craft for Cudeca with Serendipity Creative Centre, Alora offers One day workshops on 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 13th & 14th May 2008. Each workshop will teach you how to produce Handmade Paper and will include: tuition, all materials, ideas for use, morning coffee, lunch, wine and soft drinks - and you take home whatever you produce. These workshops are offered at a reduced price to help Cudeca raise funds to ensure that their in-patient department is kept open. A place on a workshop is 40 euros per person but 30 euros will go to Cudeca from each place.
