Giant Pandas Leave for Spain

A pair of giant pandas has left China on their journey to Madrid. The pandas will spend 10 years in Spain as a goodwill gesture promised during a visit by King Juan Carlos to Beijing earlier in the year.

The pandas will be accompanied by their own keepers and three zoo workers from Madrid throughout the trip, which is expected to take around 30 hours. The pandas will have a special air-conditioned room for their flight, which will be maintained at 20 degrees Celsius, similar to their natural habitat.

After their arrival at Madrid zoo, the pandas will be given time to acclimatize to their new environment and will make their official debut in late September 2007.

The tourist industry is also pleased that the majority of reservations for this summer were made without establishments having to resort to special offers and reduced prices.
