Zapatero Promises Better Protection for British Buyers in Spain
The recently re-elected Spanish Socialist Party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has promised to bring in some positive changes for Britons looking to buy into the Spanish property market. The changes promised will mean that people looking to buy in Spain will have better protection through more regulation of the sector. The party also wants to encourage buyers to purchase their property through mortgage providers, and by doing this they can have a tax-free allowance of up to 60,000 euros.
Government Proposes Big Spending on Roads
The Spanish government has proposed spending 12 billion euros in partnership with private companies on road building and improvements. Total spending is expected to be around 20 billion euros for work to be competed between 2009 and 2012. The intention is to give a boost to the construction industry in the present difficult circumstances, but will have to comply with EU spending rules on public projects.
Building Stopped After Ancient Bones Found
The building of several homes in Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia has been halted after around 300 skeletons from the Copper age were unearthed at the site. The bones found could be some 5,000 years old, and it is thought by archaeologists that they may be the founders of the city. The skeletons of dogs and ceramic items have also been found at the site.
New Book on Legends of Almeria
A new book called Enigmas y Leyendas de Almeria has recently been published which details various urban legends of the province of Almeria. These include the well known myths of spontaneous combustion in the village of Lamoya in 1945 and the alleged birth of Walt Disney in Mojacar. The book is by local author Alberto Cerezuela and is published by Ediciones Cultiva.
Cine Exhibitions in Malaga
Two exhibitions, part of the XI Festival de Malaga-Cine Espanol, can be seen in various locations in Malaga currently. “Nostalgias en Blanco y Negro 1915-1975” (Nostalgia in Black and White) can be seen in Maria Zambrano station and Calle Larios until May 2nd , and the Museo Municipal until April 15th. Historia de Cine en Malaga 1898-2008 can be seen in the Archivo Municipal on Alameda Principal until May 4th.
Regatta in Malaga
This weekend (4th to 6th April) the eighth edition of the City of Malaga-Costa del Sol regatta takes place in Malaga bay. The competitions form part of the championship of Andalucia with over thirty boats taking part.
New Museum in Malaga
The birthplace of Antonio Canovas del Castillo, an important political figure in 19th century Malaga, is to be refurbished and converted into a museum and centre for information, study and interpretation of the man and the era he lived in. The work is expected to take about 18 months at a cost of around 2 million euros.
Town Hall Refuses New Road Link
The Ayuntamiento of Malaga has turned down local requests for a new road link near Monte Victoria due to the likely impact on the environment. The area is home to 72 species of resident and migratory birds and various types of reptiles, small mammals, trees and plant life.
New HQ for Traffic Dept. of Malaga
The Jefatura Provincial de Trafico de Malaga has a new HQ on Calle Max Estrella in Cortijo Alto district. The building was opened on 1st April after 3 years work at a cost of about 10 million euros and is expected to deal with 400,000 transactions per year.
New Ryanair Link to Liverpool
From April 1st the low cost airline Ryanair has opened a new route from Malaga to Liverpool with three flights per week. This will be followed in May by a link from Malaga to Marseilles with a twice weekly frequency.
1st Exhibition of Indigenous Andalucian Poultry
Alora is holding its first exhibition of Andalucian poultry this weekend between 4th and 6th of April. The exhibition opens at 11.00 am until 9.00 pm on Saturday and 5.00 pm on Sunday. There is also a small market being held nearby at the same time. The exhibition is being held at the Cancula Municipal Building.
Old Rubbish Tip to Become New Park
The local voluntary group Omepa is to rehabilitate an area of land known as La Isla near the river Guadalhorce in Alora which used to be a rubbish tip, to turn it into an urban park. They will be working on the land in conjunction with the Ayuntamiento and the Junta de Andalucia, planting trees and bushes throughout April. When this is finished viewpoints and footpaths will be created and benches and other urban furniture will be added.
Dance Classes in Alora
From 2nd April dance classes for Salsa, Tango, Paso Doble etc. will be held in the Casa de Cultura at 9pm on Wednesdays. These are organised by the Ayuntamiento’s Councillor for Women.
Malaga 0 Albacete 0
Another goalless draw against one of their bogey teams has left Malaga still in second place in La Liga 2. This Sunday they travel to Soria to take on Numancia at 12.00 midday.
Formula 1
Tomorrow (Sunday 6th April), the Bahrain Grand Prix takes place. So far, practice suggests that it will again be a straight fight between Ferrari and McLaren with Spain’s Fernando Alonso in the middle of the field in his Renault. The motor racing authorities have decided not to penalise Lewis Hamilton for failing to attend an immediate medical examination after his spectacular crash in the second practice session.
Nadal Reaches Final
Rafael Nadal defeated Tomas Berdych to reach the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami yesterday (Friday 4th April). He will play either Roddick or Davydenko in the final on Sunday.
