Spanish Banks Safe
The Spanish finance minister Pedro Solbes has said that he is convinced that Spanish banks are in no danger of facing the kind of turmoil that British and American banks have recently suffered. His comments came after Banco Santander purchased the best parts of Bradford and Bingley on its nationalisation by the British government.
Ryanair Ordered to Respect Bookings
The long running story where Ryanair threatened to cancel bookings made through other travel websites seems to have ended with a Madrid court ordering the airline to respect bookings made through the Spanish travel portal Rumbo and to remove the offending clause from its own website.
Turtles in Cabo de Gata
A controlled programme of turtle rearing with a view to controlling the number of jellyfish in the Mediterranean has seen 247 young turtles born recently in the Cabo de Gata national park near Almeria. The plan to reintroduce the species into their natural habitat follows a similar successful project carried out in the Canaries.
Prehistoric Burial Site Saved
The Junta de Andalucia has overruled a plan to build a commercial centre and houses on a 4500 year old Copper age burial site near Sevilla. The site near Castilleja de Guzman contains dolmens and burial chambers and was declared a site of national interest in 2003. It is now to be restored and a visitor centre will be added.
Feria de Tierra Adentro de Jaen
115 exhibitors from all over Spain will be present at the interior of Andalucia tourism fair in Jaen this weekend until October 5th. The event will promote rural tourism and also feature a gastronomic festival.
Dianimal Fiesta in Granada
This Sunday October 5th sees the second edition of the Dianimal fiesta near Granada. The event is held in Cenes de la Vega to raise awareness of abandoned animals and includes various attractions, music, demonstrations and a market.
Guide on Assistance to be Prepared
The British consulate for Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla is to prepare a guide detailing the assistance available to British residents in the region. Apparently around 40% of these residents turn to the consulate for help at some time during their stay here.
Foreigners Increase Malaga Population
Statistics for 2007 show that Malaga’s population grew by 2,372 to 576,725 people. The loss of 3037 Spanish nationals was compensated by the arrival of 5409 immigrants. The city now contains people from 133 different nationalities, with foreigners making up 7.5% of the population.
Restored Koran in Malaga’s Archives
An ancient handwritten copy of the Koran said to be from the 12th to 15th century has been restored and now in the historical archives of Malaga. The parchment document was discovered in the village of Cutar along with other religious and legal documents. This document is said to be unique in Spain and a facsimile has been presented to the mayor of the village for display in the planned museum there.
World Day of Birds in Malaga
This weekend until October 5th SEO Malaga (Spanish Ornithological Society) will celebrate El Dia Mundial de Aves with conferences, photographic exhibition and guided excursions.
Junta Rejects Housing Plans
The Junta de Andalucia has rejected for the second time a construction project including 1500 homes planned by Alhaurin el Grande town hall in the Barranco Blanco beauty spot between Alhaurin and Coin. Environmental and visual aspects were the main reasons given for the refusal to approve the plan.
Cheese Fair and Market in Teba
The eighth Feria-Mercado del Queso Artesano takes place in Teba this weekend until October 5th. Over 70 stalls selling cheeses from all over Spain will be displaying their wares, and prizes will be awarded for the best cheeses in various categories.
Feria de Ganado
The village of Villanueva de Tapia welcomes its annual Feria de Ganado (livestock fair) next weekend October 10th-12th, featuring livestock sales, a cookery workshop etc. from 11.00am.
Expo Yoga in Marbella
The second edition of Expo Yoga takes place in Marbella this weekend until Sunday October 5th. This is a congress about various aspects of the practice of Yoga, and features a range of free activities from 11.00am until 9.00pm each day at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos.
Guadalhorce Cycling Tour
The sixteenth running of the Malaga cycling championship takes place this Sunday October 5th and will pass through many parts of the region including Cartama, Pizarra, and Ardales on its 115 km circuit to and from Malaga.
Ruta de la Tapa
A total of 16 bars and restaurants will be participating in the second edition of the Ruta de la Tapa in Pizarra this weekend until Sunday October 5th. The event is held to promote the culture of “tapeo” in the locality and visitors will be able to try many different tapas at a price of 1.50€ including a drink.
Football
Following the first victory of the season 2-1 over Valladolid last weekend, Malaga travel to face Recreativo on Sunday October 5th at 5.00pm.
