Bernie Ecclestone confirms new F1 race in Valencia

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that he has closed a deal for the Spanish city of Valencia to hold a grand prix on a brand new urban circuit next year, the agreement is for seven years, the original announcement caused a political storm in Spain because Ecclestone appeared to link the deal to the victory of the conservative presidential candidate Francisco Camps in regional elections, Camps was re-elected as president of the Valencian regional government last month.

The race, to be called the European Grand Prix, is scheduled for late in the season on a newly designed circuit based around the city's America's Cup port, the inclusion of the Valencia race will give Spain two grands prix next year. Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya has a contract to hold the Spanish Grand Prix until 2016.

Spain continue revival with 2-0 win

Spain improved their chances of earning a place in Euro 2008 when they notched up their third qualifying win in a row with a 2-0 Group F victory in Latvia on Saturday, the visitors dominated the opening 45 minutes but it took an own goal from defender Arturs Zakresevskis on the stroke of halftime to break the deadlock.

Latvia gave Spain several scares at the start of the second half but midfielder Xavi put the result beyond doubt when he beat Aleksandrs Kolinko with a deflected shot just after the hour, the win left Spain in third place in the group with 12 points from six games and they will expect to make that 15 when they meet Liechtenstein in Vaduz this Wednesday.

Spain stakes claim on wreck

The Spanish government has filed claims in U.S. federal court over a shipwreck that a Florida firm found laden with colonial-era treasure, if the vessel was Spanish or was removed from that country's waters, any treasure would belong to Spain, said James Goold, an attorney representing the government.

"It's a very well established principle under Spanish, U.S. and international law that a government such as the kingdom of Spain has not abandoned its sunken ships or sunken property, and that a company like Odyssey Marine Exploration may not conduct recovery operations without authorization by the government," he said. "The kingdom of Spain has not authorized any such operations by Odyssey, and by these legal actions it will see the return of any Spanish property Odyssey has recovered," Goold said of the claims filed Wednesday.

EU law puts chemicals through safety tests

Far-reaching safety rules on tens of thousands of chemicals used in everyday items from car seats to face cream took effect in the European Union on Friday, obliging firms to show their products comply. The regulations cover substances used in a huge variety of goods, with firms in the EU scrambling to assemble the required data on all the chemicals they produce or import.

The European Parliament and EU governments approved a final version of the bill in December after years of fierce debate between environmentalists and industry. The law requires the properties of roughly 30,000 chemicals produced or imported into the EU to be registered with the agency. Those of highest concern, such as carcinogens, would require testing and authorisation, a process that could lead to outright bans.

HSBC has sold it's Canary Wharf headquarters building for £1.1 billion to Metrovacesa, of Spain, the most expensive single office sale in the UK. Under the terms of the deal, the Spanish company, a first-time buyer in London’s commercial property market, will get a return of less than 4 per cent on its money, a record low for City offices.

Recent rains have not been enough to increase the levels in the Guadalhorce valley

The lack of rain on the Costa del Sol, where it has only rained of note on nine days in the last three months, means that the official drought decrees for Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley are to remain in place, the local reservoirs only hold 64% of the water needed for the drought declaration to be lifted. It comes despite the fact that the recent rains have ensured that there is more water in the reservoirs this year than last. The Guadalhorce however only holds 92.5 cubic hectometres currently, far less than the 145 needed for the drought to be considered over.

Earthrace abandons record attempt

The Earthrace team have abandoned their bid to break the Round the World Speed Record, the trimaran suffered stress damage to the main hull during a storm in the Mediterranean and repairs would have put them too far behind record pace. The decision comes after a disaster-laden voyage that has left one man dead, the original aim of the voyage, to break the record using biodiesel, is also in tatters after the team were unable to source the alternative fuel in the remote archipelago of Palau. They filled up with standard diesel instead.

Nevertheless, skipper Pete Bethune says: "We can all feel proud of what we have achieved with the limited resources we had, and we do take some heart from that, "We gave it our best shot. "The Earthrace project was created to promote the awareness and use of alternative fuels such as biodiesel. And whilst it is disappointing to miss out on the world record, we have certainly succeeded in our overall aim of promoting biodiesel, and we will continue to build on this success during our upcoming European promotional tour."

The New Zealand-based team will take the boat, which is in Malaga, to Valencia to support the New Zealand entry in the America's Cup, before heading north for a promotional tour of the UK and Northern Europe.
