New Political Party Launched in Spain

A new political party has been launched in Spain ahead of a general election set for March 2008. The Union, Progress and Democracy (UPD) party grew out of the anti-ETA citizens' movement "Basta Ya", or "That's Enough", which has vocally opposed attacks carried out by the armed Basque separatist movement. The party has been described as "progressive" and "neither from the left nor the right, with support from both sides."

Air France-KLM Prepare a Bid for Iberia

Air France-KLM is preparing a takeover offer for Spanish carrier Iberia with several Spanish partners who will take a majority stake in the group, evidently Air France-KLM would team up with investment company Torreal and publishing and communication group Planeta to launch an offer, British Airways, in alliance with investment fund Texas Pacific Group, are also preparing an offer for Iberia, BA and TPG have not made a firm offer, but have suggested a price of 3.60 euros per share, valuing the group at 3.4 billion euros.

Delta Airlines Plan to Fly from Malaga to New York

The American company, Delta Airlines, is planning to start a direct flight to JFK Airport in New York from June 2008. Initially the service will run three times a week, and comes as part of Delta’s plans to diversify their services. Delta will use 757-200 jets with 174 seats in two classes. Delta's spokesperson also said that if things go according to plan the service will be daily from 2009 with the route being consolidated over the next three years.

Passenger Increase in Low-cost Flights to Spain in August

Latest figures show that 2.7 million passengers flew to Spain on low-cost airlines during August. The number is a 42.9% increase for the same month last year and shows the massive growth in the sector. The figure comes from the Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade which reported that during the first eight months of the year 15.8 million passengers came to Spain on low-cost flights, up 31.1%, and compared to a drop of 2.9% in passenger numbers on traditional airlines. Ryanair, Easyjet and Air Berlin together account for more than half of the low-cost market in Spain.

First Low Price Daily Newspaper to Hit the Newsagents in Spain

A new daily newspaper hit Spain's news agents on Wednesday (26th September) it costs half of its paid competitors, this is a very deliberate effort to steal readers from both paid and the free papers. Called "Publico" the newspaper will have 64 all colour pages, compared to the roughly 20 pages put out by most of the free newspapers, it will feature more graphics and bigger pictures as well as shorter articles than other paid papers. "Politics will not be a subject which we will dedicate most of our time and efforts," said its director Ignacio Escolar.

"The Orphanage" is Spain's Oscar Candidate

"The Orphanage", a thriller by director Juan Antonio Bayona, has been chosen by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences as Spain's candidate for an Oscar. The film will compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It tells the story of a young woman caught up in terror and suspense in an orphanage on Spain's northern coast. "The Orphanage" opens on 11th October in Spain.

1.1 Billion Euros for Malaga Province in Government Spending Budgets for 2008

The state budgets, which were presented this week, show that the Government intends to spend 1.1 billion euros in Malaga province in 2008, the amount is 11% higher than this year. The airport, a second ring road round Malaga and more water works towards the integrated water treatment plan for the Costa del Sol take up a large portion of the spending along with the AVE high speed train. There is also a budget for the new Fine Arts Museum in Malaga and reforms to the city's port.

First AVE Engine Completed in Malaga

The RENFE workshops at Los Prados in Malaga have already finished their first locomotive, Type S130, for the new Malaga to Madrid AVE line. In total they will make 7 units of this model which has a variable gauge and capacity of 250 kilometres an hour. At the end of 2008, they will begin the manufacture of 14 complete trains of the series Talgo Bombadier Series 102, which is capable of exceeding 300 kilometres an hour and is nicknamed 'Patos' (Ducks).

33 Million Euros to be Invested in New Marina for Eastern Axarquia

The new marina planned for the eastern Axarquia will be built at the mouth of the Frontiles Arroyo, a stream which runs along the border between Nerja and Torrox according to a report in the Malaga press although the final decision on the future site would lie with the Environment Ministry. The Junta de Andalucia is investing 33 million euros in the Nerja-Torrox marina, which will have 500 berths for boats of between eight and 25 metres in length, although there will be a section reserved for vessels of up to 35 metres. The marina will take up an area of 22.9 hectares of which 7.2 will be land and 15.7 water, including a 3,500 square metre platform for associated activities. The timescale for construction is approximately two years with a possible start date in 2008.

Evidence of Neanderthal Man Found in Nerja Caves

Three flint tools dating from 40,000 years ago have been found in the caves at Nerja. The find confirms that the cave was inhabited by Neanderthal man. A group of scientists have been looking at items removed from the famous cave 20 years ago and say that there is no doubt about the evidence. The tools date from the middle Palaeolithic period and are part of 151,588 items which have been newly classified.

Sumatran Tiger Cub on Show at Fuengirola Zoo

A three month old female Sumatran tiger cub and its mother are being exhibited in a compound designed to resemble the ruins of Angkor Temple in Cambodia at Fuengirola zoo. According to a zoo spokesman, the birth was the result of one of 35 European captive reproduction schemes currently being undertaken at the centre, the aim of which is to safeguard species in extreme danger of extinction. The Sumatra tiger is the smallest of the six surviving species of tiger still in existence and is included on the Nature Conservation Union's Red List of Endangered Species, classified as "critically threatened."

New C & A Store Opens in Malaga

A new branch of the C & A clothing store was due to open in the centre of Malaga this week. The store is situated just off the main shopping street in Malaga, calle Marques de Larios, and was due to open Thursday 27th September.

Works Begin on Coin - A-357 Link Road

Work on the new road from Coin to the A-357 motorway is finally underway after a year and a half of delays, due mostly to complications related to land expropriations. The six-kilometre road will run from the Venta Platero roundabout in Coin to the motorway link at Casapalma.

Cartama Cooking Oil to Be Recycled as Bio-diesel

Cartama's residents now have a convenient way to dispose of their used cooking oil in an environmentally friendly fashion. The town hall has installed several new kitchen-oil recycling containers and is urging local people to use them. The used oil, deposited into the container in lidded plastic bottles, will be collected periodically and shipped to a plant to be converted into bio-diesel. The oil recycling bins come as part of an ongoing town hall initiative to increase the number of materials that residents can recycle. The town has the usual bins for glass, plastics and paper, and last year added containers for recycling batteries.

Alora Joins the Consortium of Transportation

Alora has new bus stop information signs as it has now joined the Consortium of Transportation, which will allow its citizens to travel for less when using the bus services between Alora and Malaga and locally. A 'Tarjeta de Viajes' must be obtained, which is available from the Tabacos shops of Malaga and Alora, the cards can also be topped up in the Tabacos. The card will also enable cheaper journeys to Pizarra, Aljaima, Cartama and Campanillas.

The introduction of Alora into the Consortium of Transportation, affects not only the Amarillo bus service but the Rivero service, which connects the Barriadas de Alora (El Puente, Bellavista, Las Mellizas, Estacion and El Chorro) with the town.

New Roundabout in Service in Alora

The new roundabout at the Fuente de la Mania entrance to Alora has come into service, improving one of the most difficult junctions in the town. These works form part of the wider project of remodelling the whole area. some drivers of articulated lorries feel it could be easier to negotiate however, the roundabout still requires the finishing touches which will include an Arabic archway, a symbol of Alora.

Work Stopped on Alora's New Swimming Pool

Alora's new heated swimming pool will not be finished by the end of this year and is now not expected to be open until winter 2008. The work stopped in July as a result of financial problems with one of the two businesses appointed to carry out the work. Jose Sanchez Moreno, Alora's mayor, indicated that the town Council is trying to terminate the contract with the construction company for exceeding of the time limit of the work. The petition will now have to be endorsed by the Consultative Counsel and, then the project will have to be put out to tender again to finish the remainder of the work.

Day of the 'Sopas Perotas'

Next Saturday, 6th October, Alora celebrates its fifth 'Dia de las sopas Perotas'. The event takes place in Plaza Baja de “La Despedia”. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural heritage the town offers as well as try the local Sopa. The event usually begins around lunchtime.

Malaga 1 - 0 Eibar

With five wins out of five Malaga stay top of the second division. Malaga play away this Saturday (29th September) when they travel to Poli Ejido. Kick off is at 6.30 pm.

Japanese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position from McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso with a flying lap at the end of the Japanese Grand Prix qualifying session. Alonso, two points behind Hamilton with three races left, is in second place with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen third and Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa fourth.

Vuelta a Espana 2007

Russian cyclist Denis Menchov won his second Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) last weekend. The final stage, which finished in Madrid last Sunday (23rd September), was won by the Italian Daniele Bennati, who celebrated his third partial victory in a Vuelta although it was not enough to win him a place in the overall top ten.
