Millions Watch Zapatero-Rajoy Election Debate
A record 13 million viewers watched a live TV election debate between the Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the leader of the opposition, Mariano Rajoy. It has been confirmed as being the fourth most watched programme in the history of television in Spain. Those programmes that achieved more viewers were the performance of singer Rosa in the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest, the penalty shoot out between Valencia and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and the celebration of Real Madrid winning their seventh European Cup.
Opinion Poll Shows Socialists to Win in Andalucia
An opinion poll carried out in Andalucia shows that the Socialist Party would obtain an absolute majority in the regional election on 9th March, and Manuel Chaves would be returned as the President of the Junta de Andalucia, a position he has held since 1990.
Javier Bardem Wins an Oscar
Javier Bardem has won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in his role as the serial killer with the bad haircut, in No Country for Old Men. He becomes the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar although he had been nominated previously, in 2001, for Best Actor in ‘Antes de que anochezca – Before night falls’. Bardem comes from a family of actors; his uncle Juan Antonio was the first Spaniard to be nominated for an Oscar in 1959 for ‘La Venganza’, and his mother Pilar is well known in Spain as both an actress and a political activist.
Two Goya Paintings to be Restored
The Prado Museum in Madrid is restoring two of Francisco de Goya's most celebrated paintings which were damaged during the 1936-39 civil war, according to a museum official. The aim is to have the paintings restored in time for an exhibition of the artist's works called "Goya and the War Years" which is due to open on 14th April. The two paintings, 'Charge of the Mamelukes' and 'The Shootings of May 3rd', were damaged when they were transported from Madrid to Valencia to protect them from the bombings in Madrid.
Bank of Spain Still Changing Pesetas for Euros
The director of the Banco de Espana, Spain's national bank has stated that around 30 people a day are still bringing in Spanish pesetas to be changed into euros. He said that the Banco de Espana also exchanges burnt or damaged banknotes for new ones as long as more than half of the note is intact.
Iberia Publishes Figures for 2007
The Spanish airline Iberia's pre-tax profit grew by 182% to 327.6 million euros in 2007 it was announced this week; turnover grew 2.5% to 5.5 billion euros. Passengers numbers fell by 3.4% to 26.8 million, but the number of long-distance passengers grew 8.1% to 4.1 million. Iberia top long-distance destinations include Latin American countries and the United States.
Jellyfish Problem Likely to Continue
After studying populations of jellyfish off the Catalan coast scientists have concluded that the recent invasions of Spanish beaches are set to continue. Global warming, along with bad fishing practices, and the reduction of natural predators such as leatherback turtles have contributed to a boom in numbers of these creatures. The scientists have found that the jellyfish proliferate throughout the year, being born in deep waters in the autumn then moving into shallower waters when the weather warms up. They also believe that urgent action is required to deal with the problem, not only with regard to fishing practices, but also with reducing the amount of nutrients reaching the sea from land sources.
Man Found Not Guilty For Letting 10-Year Old Join Bull Run
A judge in Pamplona has found a father not guilty of acting irresponsibly toward his 10-year-old son, after they participated in last year's San Fermin bull festival in Pamplona. The 28-year-old man was, however, fined 150 euros because the minimum age to take part in the event is 16.
Brown Bears Increase in Mountains of Spain
Small colonies of brown bears are increasing in the northern mountain ranges of Asturias and Cantabria. Numbers of fertile females have doubled in the past decade and traces of bear activity have tripled in the last two years. After years of reducing numbers due to illegal hunting and the encroachment of tourism, more effective controls are leading to the present revival in numbers. Illegal hunters now face two years in jail and a fine of up to 300,000 euros for the 'ecological crime' of killing a bear.
New Resident for Selwo Park, Estepona
Selwo Adventure Park in Estepona has a new resident called Pulgarcito, who is a Titi Monkey, the smallest primate in the world. These animals grow to a length of 15cm and weigh less than 140 grams. He has now completed his quarantine period and visitors should be able to see him in the park.
Fuente de Piedra Flamingos Affected by Water Levels
The four year drought is causing concern among experts regarding the breeding of the flamingos at La Fuente de Piedra Lake in Antequera. At the moment there are only 1,078 birds in the wetland, according to information from the Junta de Andalucia. The lake is currently 18 centimetres deep, however it is hoped that the expected rainfall will improve the situation.
Possible New Role for Donkeys
A successful change to using donkeys instead of rubbish collecting lorries in a southern Italian town could be copied in Andalucia. The Nerja donkey sanctuary plans to send a report on the scheme to the Junta de Andalucia who have been asking for environmentally friendly suggestions. Members who visited the town of Castelbuono, Sicily saw that 10 donkeys now efficiently do the job that 4 lorries used to do at more or less the same cost, with the possible additional bonus of the donkeys' milk being made available for people allergic to cows' milk.
Regional President Says Successor Should be a Woman
The President of the Junta de Andalucia, Manuel Chaves, said this week that he thought his successor should be a woman. His comments came during a speech before the Dia de Andalucia was celebrated at the regional parliament. Chaves said that 'the moment had arrived' for a woman to take over the role.
Recent Rains Increase Water Levels in Malaga Reservoirs
The recent heavy rains in Malaga province have increased the volume of water in local reservoirs. Most of the water was collected after one particular day of heavy rainfall. Latest figures from Malaga’s reservoirs show them up to 26% of their total capacity, compared with 36% last year. They have a combined total capacity of 614 cubic hectometres.
Costa del Sol Beaches to be Repaired by Easter
Work has begun in Malaga province to replace the sand that was lost from beaches in the recent storms and Levante winds. The Environment Ministry has promised to replace the sand immediately to make them ready for Easter and the Coastal Authority will be depositing 200,000 cubic metres on the beaches affected. Among the beaches to have new sand are La Caleta in Malaga City, Torrox, Marbella, Estepona, Benalmadena, Chilches, Mezquitilla and Lagos in Velez Malaga.
Malaga Airport Growth
It's has been predicted that by 2010 Malaga's airport will have generated employment for at least 300,000 people, both directly and indirectly. According to an air traffic growth study, by 2010 the airport will handle some 15.3 million passengers.
Spain's Most Expensive House
The most expensive house currently for sale in Spain is priced at 90 million euros. The property is known as The Carmen de los Chapiteles and is in Granada. The house is 80 metres from the grounds of the Alhambra and has its own direct access into the Generalife gardens. The 15th century palace has twelve bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a magnificent sitting room and a wood panelled dining room.
Drugs Found on Light Aircraft After Emergency Landing
Police officers found 600kg of hashish on a light aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing in a field near Isla Menor in Sevilla last week. The pilot and co-pilot tried to make their escape but were captured after a brief search involving a Guardia Civil helicopter. The drugs were found in the plane's cargo hold packed into 20 bales.
El Torcal Interpretation Centre Now Open
The new interpretation centre, recently constructed at El Torcal, was opened on 22nd February, although some facilities are not yet available to the public. At the moment, food and drink machines provide light refreshments for visitors until the concession for the café is organised.
New Business Association in Antequera
The Malaga Young Business Owners Association (AJE) has opened an office in Antequera with the aim of encouraging and developing new businesses starting up in the town. A first meeting was held recently with the Mayor, the AJE Malaga president and various other delegates attending. More than 80 companies from Malaga city and Antequera were represented and the organisation also plans to set up a similar operation in Marbella. In the province of Malaga, there are now more than 700 member companies.

The male and female winners of the Alora half marathon, which takes place tomorrow (Sunday 2nd March) will be invited to participate in the New York Marathon in November.

Website Visitors Double in 2007
The official web page of tourism in Spain, www.spain.info, received 30 million visits in 2007, 52% up on the previous year, with almost 80% based in the old EU countries, the US, UK, and Japan.

Formula 1
After three days of practising at the Montmelo circuit near Barcelona the eleven motor racing teams have moved on to Australia to prepare for the first Grand Prix of the season. It appears likely that the championship will again be fought out by McLaren and Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton recording fastest times on two of the three days. Spain’s Fernando Alonso seems destined to be kept in the middle of the field in the Renault.
