Holidays in Spain

History

Spain has had a rich and diverse history. Many different cultures and ethnic groups have ruled the area that is now called Spain. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Celts, Bourbons and Napoleon, Spain has grown into one of the top ten economies in the world. Spain sent Christopher Columbus to find the New World in 1492. Shortly thereafter, in the beginning of the nineteenth century, Spain was ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte's brother. The ending of his short rule marked the beginning of much unrest and unstable government for the country. The soil was bloodied, and although Spain stayed far from the First World War, a grueling and bloody civil war raged through the end of the 1930's. The Spanish Civil War was immortalized in books like "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "A Farewell to Arms," written by Ernest Hemingway. The end of the Spanish Civil War marked the beginning of a new era led by victorious fascist Francisco Franco. The fascist leader would die in 1975 sparking a transformation in Spanish government that led to an economic surge giving the country the economic power and respect it has today. Holidays to Spain are very safe trips as the society is currently peaceful, friendly and stable.
