It should be perfectly ok to record from free to air stations, it seems like perhaps your set up is not correctly set up.

in most cases you need to connect AV1 scart from the VCR to the VCR scart on the freesat box.
the tv scart from the freesat box goes to the tv...

therefore to record anything form the freesat box you need to ensure AV1 on your VCR is selected.

with a few dvd recordered you need to do it another way...freesat tv scart to av2 on dvdr....then av1 on dvdr to tv....then select av2 on the dvdr to record freesat.

do not connect using the coaxcables...the quality will not be as good as scarts...

to receive free to air (FTA) uk tv from satellite you will need a satellite dish and receiver

to receive free to air and free to view (FTV) uk tv from satellite you will need a satellite dish and a receiver and a sky freesatfromsky card

to receive free to air, free to view and subscription uk tv from satellite you will need a satellite dish and a receiver and a sky subscription card

bbc1,2,3,4 and sky news are examples of FTA

Fiver and Fives USA are examples of FTV

There are NO UK TV channels on the spanish "freeview" equivilent caled TDT - digital tv via your tv aerial.
