Hi, we drive from St Malo to Alicante quite often, we usually pay about 30 euros each way in tolls.

If You want you can actually but a toll card which works out a lot cheaper and will take you through all of the tolls in france, i don't read french but my husband mentioned it when we drove to spain, it would have worked out a lot better for us as we paid nearly 250.00eu not including fuel.  Look it up.  i think you have to buy it before you set on your journey they don't sell it at the toll booth.

regards

jannine

Hi, does the card work for the spanish tolls as well or just France, if not is there a system for toll cards in spain. We've been caught out a couple of times when going from the airport to our apartment and not having any coins ready for the tolls, having a card in the wallet could be handy!

regards hobby

Hi Hobby I have delayed answering your question on this thread just to see if anyone else bothered (and also to give you a break from the sound of my keyboard strikes). Anything regarding the tolls in France is exclusive to France. I assume that you mean the Calahonda and San Pedro toll? You can get a device (depending on who you bank with) similar to a Dart Tag (if you ever use the Dartford Tunnel in Essex/Kent). It sticks in the front screen of your car and it logs you going through the tolls and automatically debits your bank account. Your problem as I see it would be that it is a fairly bulky thing (large mobile phone ish?) and not convenient to carry around. It is possible to pay by credit card at the tolls (so I am told but I always have cash) where it indicates Tarjetas. If you dont already know, in summer the tolls are higher than winter months - damn cunning these Spanish. Think Calahonda is 3.35 ish at the moment so remember when you come next week to have it to hand. Something you may not have tried but depends on time of day is doing the coast road. If you are arriving relatively late at night - 9pm onwards at this time of year - the coast road is nearly as quick. Instead of taking the left fork at Funky Town for the AP7 take the right fork and follow the coast road. To be honest its as near as makes no difference and you save a few bob - of course if its during the day stick to the Autopista. Be very very careful on both if we have cats and dogs next week - there is so much standing water that both of them become nightmarish and the Spanish still want to drive in your boot.

I assume you will walk across the border and hire this side. Dont know if you have booked the car already but when I was renting when first here I used to book through a broker - used to save a fortune over hiring direct. Recommend to all my visitors and cant think why I havent mentioned on the site before. My mates tell me they always seem to pay less at Crown and all the others than people who have booked direct. Try them and see if you think they are any good - Arrow Car Hire - based Benalmadena but hire all along the coast - freefone from the UK used to be 0800 198 1107 - local is 952 564 912 - speak to Bev or Jeremy and tell them Patrick told you to make sure they give you a good deal.

Just to update on the weather front it has been threatening rain today - will try and remember to update you next week - is it the 28th you fly?

You must be enjoying GB weather too much if you have forgotten you are here next week. Seriosuly give Arrow a whirl next time - they will quote you over the phone you compare - if I am wrong would be very surprised. Did you know about whats happening at Gib airport - going to be a new way in at the Morocco end of the runway I am told. One entrance dedicated solely to the airport. Supposed to be a new budget airline called Gib Air or something - just hope they arent grey Hercules aircraft doing the flights. Mind you nothing the Brit Govt do would surprise me - the US have stealth bombers the UK have stealth taxes.

Not sure if thats the same thing I read about in a recent spanish newspaper(english version!)because of the agreements between spain & gib now a couple of airlines have been given the go ahead to fly from madrid I believe (correct me if Im mistaken) , will certainly take the 'charm' away of flying in and out of a small, not too busy airport if it does.

A friend of mine has a place in Barcelona he lives in Leeds and regularly drives there  he informs me that a route now exists through France where tolls are around £30 don’t know the route but it involves crossing a newly built bridge in France, it takes him around 2-3 hrs longer than the very expensive motorways does anyone on here know the exact  route as he’s in Spain at the moment?

Hi Hobby Gib airport is going to open up. An agreement has been signed with Iberia to take over dual management of the airport. Internal flights between Gib and Spain will start in 2007 I believe. By the way weather been brilliant today so you might be lucky next week.

Hi smiley

Yes I thought it was something like Iberia, being spanish owned do you think that will have any influence on the border controls and the time it takes to get across by car, surely they can only look to improve it if the volume of  passengers increases?

Cheers for that on the weather update, anythings got to be better than the rain lashing and gale force winds we're getting in ole blighty at the moment!

All the best
