Dear folks - we are UK retired couple living in Torrox area for past two years and are now Spanish Residents.  Now my son, wife and two boys aged 7 and 4 are coming to live with us mid July until they find a place of their own.  I have just found out that they have missed the deadline (31st March) for registering their kids for the local Spanish School in Torrox pueblo.  Since they are not here yet they do not have NIE's yet so cannot apply until they actually come - but by then the schools will be closed - any ideas what to do?

Any replies gratefully received - Kind regards, Premieji

How's your Spanish?  The best thing is to bypass the middle men and go straight to the school and explain the situation to the headmaster.

Before we arrived we made the mistake of doing things the proper way and we didn't manage to get our kids into the local nursery.  Then, when they could attend the local school we'd missed the deadline so went to see the headmaster.  He basically said "no problem" and they were in.

So definitely just go direct to the school and chat with the headmaster.  If your Spanish isn't up to scratch yet then you'll have to drag a Spanish friend along with you.

Best of luck.

Justin

Yes Justin, that's the way to go.

Just go and see the school.

When we made the decision to move here we went to look at the local school. Our son was 7 at the time. We didn't have much Spanish then, so asked a friend to help us.
As it turned out the friend could not be at the school at the appointed time (some problem with the car as I remember!) No problem. The school pulled an English kid out
of class to translate for us. This was in the Easter of the year before we intended to move. (we moved in the summer of the following year)
What gob-smacked us was that there was NO PROBLEM with our son joining the school.
The headmaster told us that if the class goes over 25 children, the class is split in half. Our son is in a class of 16 with a sister class of 15. (where in the UK do you find that?)
The headmaster asked us when we wanted our son to start, Monday? Baring in mind we weren't moving till the next summer, he was a little confused! Our son could have started
straight away. The school was happy to wait for NIE's etc.

It's not the same as the UK here. If you live in the area, your child will go to the local school. (BTW, we are in Catalunya) We do however pay for his books and sundries.(This year
about 120 euros)  A small price to pay for having my child in a class of 16 kids!

Just go the the school.

Take care.

Fiona.

Dear Premieji:

They are already admitted.

If there is just that school in the town they are obligued to admitt every one ( spaniard or foreigner) in schooling age.

As Justin says, talk to the heaadmaster and you will find that answer. If you do not speak spanish, bring someone to translate and that´s it!

Maria

The children can be registered at a school at any time during the year.  If you have missed the initial registration period (typically in spring) you can usually apply when the offices open again about 3 weeks before the school year begins.
