Hi everyone

I've just read that the artists who live and work out of the cave houses in Rojales have had their support removed and that there's speculation that developers want to get their hands on the site (I have no idea whether this is true or not though).

Anyway, there's an on-line petition to keep them as they are. If you care, please go to the website and sign:

http://www.petitiononline.com/studio17/petition.html

If you haven't visited this area then you don't know what you're missing. Also there's a house covered in shells - well worth a visit.

Irene

We intend going for a look in a couple of weeks, Irene. I found these.

Shall we ask Justin to put this in the What's the area like? board ? Lots of info on many areas in that one & it will get lost in here, which would be such a shame.

I was reading in the Torre forum that they were going to be ok though. Just tried to access their forum but server's down. Will post when I can find more info.

Hi More

Good idea to move this thread. I didn't think it through did I!

The shell house was up for sale when we went the time before last, but in October the sign was gone. The old man who decorated the house still lives there and if he's at home he'll invite you to have a look around. There's a dish at the bottom of the stairs for donations and I understand that anything he collects goes to charity. It's a great experience and well worth the visit.

There's one room inside the house (not shown in your pictures) that is also covered in shells. I have no idea how to post pictures otherwise I'd add it to yours.

Regards

Irene

Irene sent me this photo & I've posted it for her. I know it's big but you wouldn't see the detail if smaller.

Pat, I understand (from reading other forums) that it's very hit & miss what's open at the caves & when. You're near enough to take a chance though a 6 yr old would be disappointed if closed. We intend going sometime. There are two cafes there too by the car park..

ROJALES CAVE INFO

Another photo of shell house from above site. No charge for looking but old man has pots made with shells on for sale & he'll even give you a plant for it free. If you put some loose change in a dish as you leave he gives it to charity.

Apparently tourist offices have a leaflet on the Rojales cave houses. I'll try to remember to pick us one up on 18th in Guardamar & when we're over in Benijofar early evening on 20th we can pop it round to you maybe, Pat though I know we've arranged for 27th.

By the way Georgia says it's Fathers Day there on 19th so shops etc closed then all closed Good Friday 21st to Easter Monday 24th inclusive.

Is your daughter renting a car whilst there ? Guardamar's Sofia Park's nice with its lake, peacocks, ducks, birds & terrapins. You can picnic in there. In evenings alongside this park there are lots of stalls selling various things & lots of cafes & restaurants.

We haven't been to either of those places and our house is so close.

Definitely somewhere to visit when we're next over. Thanks for those pics and video.

You haven't seen Sofia park, Laury ? Really ? It had no water in the lake for ages at one time. We never did find out why. First time we saw it the lake had thousands of terrapins that were so comical to watch & some tinier ones kept trying to get out of the water where sides were too steep. They'd spend ages trying only to slide back into the water. Sadly, after the water was reinstated the terrapins were nowhere to be seen. Well, we only found a handful. I'm sad about that. They used to lie in the sun enjoying life, no doubt. There are a number of peacocks. At weekends the Spanish families go there en masse & there's kiddies things to play on. It's very restful in summer with so many trees for shade. Opposite the park is the dune area with its hundreds of pine trees & shade & there's a cafe. Between the two of them is the night market surrounded by restaurants & cafes that, in summer , spill out across the roads that are closed off in the late evening. It buzzes, you must go.

We only found the dune end of Guardamar on our last trip.

Not knowing the area well we always seemed to go in at the roundabout at the far end and park down there. It seemed to be all big modern apartments and stuff. We thought there was just the commercialised beach area so always wandered up to El Pinet.

On our last visit I had read on forums about the dunes at Guardamar and thought... what dunes.  So we kept driving past the town to the bit by the big chinese and found another road in. I think we may have passed the park gates on the way out again.

Next visit we will certainly take more time out to look around.

Laury

Laury, if you fancy a stroll in Guardamar go in from the Torrevieja end, only way I know though I realise you'll enter from other end but you'll get the idea, go just into Guardamar & there's a free car park on your right just after Halifax ES bank & Bedz shop. Walk towards Alicante end of main street, pop into see Shaun (Georgia) at RightMove Espana on corner just after car park. Continue along main road, taking in shops of course , till you reach Town Hall set back on your right. Walk down road at side of Town hall (right side of it) & it takes you to Sofia Park also Alfonso Park (where dunes are) & the night market, cafes, restaurants etc. (Think I've got it right).

Along the main road, on the right, is Jaen's restaurant 8€ for a MDD day & evenings too !!!(Not Mondays & Wednesdays, being market day is very busy, opens 1pm but has a bar attached to restaurant). You've been to the market, please tell me you've been to the market ?) It's a great local place is Jaen's & we love it. It has an extensive menu & they always seem to have all of it too. You get one drink included but any drink such as beer, wine, soft drink is 1€ afterwards with a whole bottle only 3€ !!! See why it's busy now, don't you ?  I posted lots on it here >>>> Jaen's restaurant, Guardamar town centre, CB You can book too. In evenings if you don't book people hang around in the bar from 7pm ish waiting to get in at 7.30pm
. We know this first hand as we were told by friends that it opened at 7pm so we sat with a drink in the bar & people were coming in shortly afterwards so they opened restaurant part 7.20pm just to clear bar.

Never seen the market.  We go to the Almoradi one every saturday morning when we're there.

Not sure which road you're on. We enter from the Torrevieja end and park alongside the road on the wide bit with the island along the centre.... generally. Or down in one of the little sea front car parks that are every few yards.

I think we've been going to the wrong bits. ha ha...

We've spent a lot of time in Santa Pola because we used to stay in the Marina hotel up there on the hill. It's reasonably priced. We also found the beach at El Pinet because it was the closest to where we house hunted for two years.

I don't know Torrevieja very well either. Just the sea front by the harbour where we normally park on street.

To be honest, we have spent most of our time in the CB house hunting and after we bought the house it was lighting and furniture shops.. etc..

We haven't really "holidayed" there as such.

Of course, once we manage to actually move there, we will have more time to explore properly.

We've also never been to Benidorm.

We enter from the Torrevieja end and park alongside the road on the wide bit with the island along the centre. Laury, that is by Halifax ES & Bedz then. Large car park is just past where you park. You must go to Guardamar market on a Wednesday. Go along the main road past Jaen's. It starts around Town Hall area. Stop for a coffee or beer in amongst stalls. Quite extensive.

It's obviously more difficult on market days, Laury, of course but we just park as soon as we can once entering town. Wandering about is part of our hols. Car park, being closer to market, is busy, naturally.

Night market is every night as far as I'm aware.
