We have learned through this forum that british beds are a different size to the Spanish ones. As we are about to complete on a property in the next few weeks just wondered what peoples opinions are on which route to take.

I know the spanish ones are a little shorter than the english, but our main concern is the actual bedding, are both types widely available,or are we best taking English bedding over to Spain to fit an English bed. i know we will be definitely be buying English sized pillows, can never get on with those long pillows you buy in Spain.

Hi

We found that UK double and single fitted sheets were ok for our double and single beds in Spain.   UK pillows are available in Ikea stores (in fact we didn't see any Spanish pillows in there).

I'm taking pillow cases and linen from here (bought in the sales) cos apart from the local markets I found they were expensive in Spain.  It all depends on what quality linen you want, in which case the Spanish prices probably match the UK ones.

We used Yorkshire Linen ( www.yorkshirelinen.com ). Don't know where you are, but they have several shops around the Costa Blanca area. Mostly UK sizes, very good quality and competitively priced - certainly cheaper than shipping it out (unless you got it in Dunelm's sale!)

Steve.

There are several places selling UK bedding.  Yorkshire Linen is a very good one and not expensive.  Due to the influx of Brits, many of the bigger stores (like Carrefour) stock English bedding but you have to search for it.  The do, however, stock British type pillows instead of those bolster thingies (which won't stop still during the night).

You'll also find several stalls on the markets doing this plus there seems to be a lot of "English Bedding Sales" cropping up in pub car parks just lately.

We take our sheets with us when we visit and they seem to fit the Spanish beds quite well, even the fitted sheets don't have too much of a crinkle in them.

Does anyone have any advice about quality/price of Spanish beds? Or,  if buying English, whether it is cheaper to buy in UK sales and ship over, or buy them in one of the many outlets in Spain that sell English beds?

Unsure where you are located Plexx but if you are in La Mariena CDS then there are a few bedshops to choose from. I think you can get a very good quality huge english king sized bed for around the 2000 euros mark but it will last. El Corte Ingles do them but I think are very expensive.

There is DFS on the mijas road and the bed shop in Estepona. Those shops sell the bedding and english pillows to go with it. Dunnes also stock english sizes up to king size.

Not sure the prices of Spanish beds but it seems that most people prefer english ones.

A single good quality matress from el corte ingles cost me just over 400 euros about a year ago - to give you an example

Thanks Rixxy,
Yes, la Mairena CDS. Up that hill. Ahh, but its lovely when you get there.
From what you are saying, looks like not much difference buying in English sales and paying for transport and same bed in Spain with delivery included.
I asked about Spanish beds because I am told they come in shorter lengths, which would be useful. i.e about 10cm  shorter. But not sure about quality, durability or comfort.
Cheers.

Nothing wrong with that hill - its pretty quik unless you get stuck behind a lorry! I went to see a plot for sale up there, beautiful views and I know the private german and spanish schools there are very popular!

I dont really have much view about the spanish beds as all the ones I have seen have the slatted base, not sprung - and ths even the more expensie ones.

Some have solid metal bases so if you like a firm one thats fine, but personally I prefer deep sprung and they seem to only be english style.

Also if you buy here then any problems you can get recourse - and they deliver free of charge! I think you can choose differeing lengths and widths as well, the only problem would be the linen though again the shop would stock what you need - get at least 2 sets and you should be fine

Hmmmmm. I think the slatted bases have limited lifespan.  I also think that as a part load of other furniture, it will be cheaper from England. But....and this is a big but.........you are absolutely spot on about having recourse.  I mean, what would I do if a spring popped out of a bed bought in England?? Food for thought. Many thanks.

Have you tried the ottoman beds ? They appear to come in a  variety of bases but with the lift up and storage underneath they could be worth a look.

Yes. saw one of them when I was last out but the mattress was not too nice.  Fantastic storage. Much better than drawers which are often flimsy and sometimes you don't have the space to pull them out. Ottomans are very expensive in UK because they are not made in volume.  I think it could be a good idea because they do away with the slatted base. Now, who knows of a really good Spanish bedmaker that does an Ottoman with a decent pocket sprung mattress? Or am I being too British?

Hi there Plexx

Re ottomans... you've obviously not seen the one we bought from The Bed Specialists at La Zenia just off the roundabout. (Take the last exit immediately before the exit to Murcia from Torrevieja. Park on left at end of car spaces facing N332 & shop is on end next to last car space)

It is the most comfortable bed ever.  In fact if we were staying in the UK much longer we'd have one sent over as the shop said they'd arrange it for us. There are many qualities of ottoman beds & ours had a fully comprehensive guarantee for FIVE years. It has many features which made it better than other ottomans we looked at (& boy, did we look at a few ! ) In April 2005 we paid 850 € for it & worth every cent. Deep sprung mattress, fantastic storage, it's a 5ft size (Spanish) a smooth action lift that is rock steady unlike some we checked out.

Please check that shop out. Couple who run it are from Newcastle & very obliging. When bed was brought to property by two English guys they put it together & took all packaging away too. Think they needed a few days to obtain it & we paid a 10% deposit & actually ordered it some months prior to our completion.

A point you may not know is if you have a British bed you put the headboard on the bed in fixtures on the bed but, in the case of Spanish beds, a headboard will need to be free standing or fastened to the wall. Nothing on bed to fix headboard to.

Well, thanks for that Morerosado. But I need some further instructions to get to the roundabout as I'm on the CDS! Seriously though, I should really be interested in the make/brand of the bed.

silly moi, Plexx. I looked at your area & just saw La Mairena (never saw the CDS bit) & just thought you'd spelt La Marina, which is not far from us, incorrectly. S**t, took me ages to type too.  Still, at least you answered, unlike many, so thanks. I don't know the name of the bed. I lost the shop's email address of the shop too when we changed pcs. If we have any trouble it will be in Spain so we'd just go to see the shop, otherwise I would email them & enquire for you. Guarantee is in our property in Spain. Not much help, am I ? However, don't be despondant as there are great ottaman beds in Spain, just go to a good bed shop. The shop we bought it from had shops all over but I've Googled & can't find it, very odd. Sorry.

Well if there are beds like that on the CB, then there must be ones here on CDS. There are several bedshops around and Im sure Ive seen them where the base rises up for storage. Also a couple of scandi, german and danish bed shops so all styles here.

No idea on prices though!

Plexx, I've got the email address of the shop & have emailed them asking for the make & any details which could help you ID the bed. They have shops elsewhere so maybe even in the CDS.

As Rixxy says there will be similar where you live. Be careful though as the cheaper Ottoman beds apparently are notorious for problems we were told by a good bed shop. The lift mechanism can go easily. When you lift ours up it is rock solid not moving from side to side slightly as some did. ALL parts of our bed, as I said, are covered by the 5 yr guarantee too. Hope we never need to use that & likely won't as bed is not used more than 6 weeks a year.

Morerosado, I look fwd to any info you get. Rixxy, i did see a decent Ottoman at The Bed Shop in Estepona last time I was out. It was priced at 1100 euros with drawers, (and i know that shop will give some discount) but I didn't really test the mechanism. It will be interesting to see if morerosado can get the brand of hers to compare. Always best on recommendation.

Thanks for taking an interest folks.

Cheers

I do recommend the bed shop in Estepona - very good and have all the linen too. Their beds are good quality and they have been here for a while so any problems will be sorted out Im sure.

Anyway - you can always ask for a testing session, just dont forget to use a screen.....
