Travelling in November with two pooches to Manilva via Bilbao, and I think I'm right in saying that I need to sort out the following bits;

  • Pet passport and other bits relating to the PETS scheme
  • Scalibor collars for sandflies, fleas etc
  • Avoid the processionary caterpillars
  • Keep them leashed & pick-up poo (as per the UK)

Do they need to legally be in cages for the trip or will doggy harnesses suffice? I'm getting various conflicting stories/info on this.

Many thanks

DEFRA  set the rules so go to their website.  If pets are staying permanently there is no need to have a blood test after their first rabies jab, which is done annually in Spain.

Vets here excellent and sell everything necessary to keep your pet safe.

As long as pets are restrained and NOT in front seat one can use cages, harnesses or guards.

Thanks for the information.  No, we're 'only' coming over for a few months over winter.  Seeing your location, have you experienced any issues with the above?

If you avoid pine trees caterpillars shouldn't be a problem. Definitely keep dogs on leads, especially in the campo, because shooting is a favourite pastime and anything that moves is a target plus , although illegal, it is not unknown for poison to be set down.

Sand flies more prevelant inland and during the months March to October , dusk to dawn, and even though our dogs wear scalibar collars all year it is not 100% guarantee .

Vet practices more prolific than in UK and excellent.
