Hi,

We are moving to Spain in November but not as residents. We are both on repeat prescriptions for diabetes/blood pressure/high cholesterol. Our prescriptions are free, we are both over 60 yrs so we do not want to have to pay for them in Spain..

We can only get two months at a time. Obviously we may not be back in the UK every two months.

Is it possible for a relative/friend to get the medications posted out to us or will they be seized because they are drugs?

Thank you

Most medications can be bought over the counter in Spain and are relatively cheap It may cost less than the postage and the risk of the package not arriving on time The spanish post is not the best in the world It is worth enquiring at the farmacia

Hi

Just to give you an indication of the prices of medications here a box of 50 tablets of metformin cost under €3,00, statins are about €4 to €5 and depending on what B.P. tablets you take they should not be too expensive. However under the EHIC rules, according to Newcastle, a repeat prescription is classed as 'emergency treatment' and as such are covered under the scheme. Just make an appointment with a 'local' doctor and ask them to issue you with the drugs. You must take with you a copy of your UK prescription, passport, EHIC and your 'temporary address' in Spain and it will be easy. In Spain they only issue you with a full box of whatever tablets you are taking. so you might get a lot more tablets than you do in the UK.

You say you are moving to Spain.

are you holiday home owners spending a few weeks at a time or are you spending several months at a time?

are you aware that after 90 days you will be regarded as resident abound will have to sign on the foreigners register?

after 180 days you will be regarded as tax  resident?

you will also not bee liable for NHS care any more as that is residence based.

Not all medications are cheap. I am a diabetic and my tablets cost 50 euros  if I were to pay for them over the counter.

other medications are also very pricey, it 's a myth that they are all about 2-3 euros. If you are not a resident, and have serious medical conditions, you may be in for a big monthly bill.

Sorry if I'm stating what you already know.
