My car is coming up to 4 years old & will require an ITV test.

The vehicle was first reqistered on 20/05/2010.

Can I take it for the ITV test before 20/05/2014 or does it have to be AFTER

20/05/2014 ??

Thanks for your help.

I just took my 4 year old car for it's first ITV, best to take it before the due date to your nearest ITV station. The car needs it's ITV in the place it was registed, ie, Valencia, Murcia etc a ITV from Murcia is not valid on a car registered in Valencia, silly but this is Spain.

Note they may not send you a reminder as the car has not had a ITV before, give the station you address and they will send you a reminder in 2 years time.

If it is tested before the due date, the ITV is issued from the date of the test, not from when it was due.  And be aware, that in Spain, unlike UK,  you cannot drive to the test unless you have a valid ITV.  If it has run out, you need to use a grua.

Of course you can drive to the ITV centre without a ITV, it's if you get caught it's a problem. We drove to our cars 1st ITV a few days after it was due as we were in the UK when it should have been done & weren't going to have it done three months before.

Sorry, if I did not make it clear. Of course one can drive without an ITV, a DL, Insurance, whilst drunk etc but if you get caught you have a problem, so perhaps it's best to not do so..

If your car fails the ITV, you have 2 weeks in which to retest it. So how can you drive it back to the ITV centre for the retest if the ITV has run out?

This bit is a straight copy from Tumbit:

However, Changes to the ITV/MOT legislation comes into effect on May 1 2010, which means that cars that have failed their MOT, or do not hold a valid certificate, will still be able to use the roads for a ten day period of grace.

Then again, some advice from another expat site:

There isn't any period of grace but you can drive your car with an expired ITV directly to the ITV centre if you have a pre booked test.

So, that's not bad. We have "NO, you need to stick it on the back of truck" and "you can drive for 10 days without an ITV" and "you can drive to a pre-booked appointment" in just 3 simple examples.

I wonder why people get so confused with all this helpful expat forum advice?

This is from :-  http://www.velascolawyers.com/en/motor-and-marine-law/80-itv-test-for-cars-and-vehicles-in-spain.html

If you are driving your Spanish registered car and do not have a current ITV sticker then you can be fined 150 euros, you can also have your license taken away and confiscated until you have proof that your vehicle has passed the ITV within the following 10 days.

That was what I was told when I ask at tehe Guardia Civil but as we are in Spain we can of course to do what we think is right !!!

From:    http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/49-your-cars-itv-spanish-mot.html

If your vehicle fails the test

If a vehicle fails the test, the owner is issued with an itemised notification of failure for you to present this to your local garage and get the necessary repairs done. Repairs must be done within 15 days of the date of this notification, and then the vehicle should be re-entered for a second examination.

However, Changes to the ITV/MOT legislation comes into effect on May 1 2010, which means that cars that have failed their MOT, or do not hold a valid certificate, will still be able to use the roads for a ten day period of grace. The driver will have to present the car for testing during the ten days, and will have to pay a 150 € fine.

http://revista.dgt.es/es/reportajes/2013/circular-sin-ITV-caro.shtml#.Uzr0nrRqZ7Q

Very quick (almost correct)

Bing translation:-  To drive with an expired ITV ,  or after having failed the test due to a serious defect is dangerous and can get expensive. Thanks to technology tools, DGT can detect offending vehicles whilst they are being driven, without need to stop them, with automatical punishment and corresponding fines, ranging between 200 and 500 euros.

From June 1, 2013  all ITV stations report by internet in real time to the DGT the result of inspections, which provides completely up-to-date information. This immediacy lets them know at the moment which vehicles have not passed the inspection or have been failed. And if it detects such a vehicle on the road, in addition to the penalty, the corresponding Provincial headquarters sends a letter to the owner warning that if not certified that it has been repaired, or has passed the MOT in the regulation period, your vehicle will be shown as unregistered for use.

According to the European Commission, 6% of the fatalities are related to technical failures of the vehicle
