Hi we have 4 bedroom  house in Melegis in the Lecrin valley just outside Granada and are considering fitting solar water heaters to combine with our current immersion heater. Any advice would be most welcome.
Do you get enough water throughout the year?
Does anyone have any idea on roughly  the cost that we should expect to pay?
And finally any recommended company to install

 Hi Dave,

I recomend you fit a pre heat type vacuum tube unit.

you can pass the water through the solar water heater first then feed the pre heated water to your existing electrical cylinder,

I have solar water heating on my house , I was so impressed by it I now import and sell units in the costa blanca area

I Get about 90 % of my yearly hot water for free !!

 Hi Smythie,

A 108 LITRE system is ok for 2 people ( showering ) and costs 540€+iva

A 160 litre System for 3/ 4 people is 700€ +iva

Yes you would require a lot less gas and no luggging cylinders

You could keep your gas boliler as a back up, with two valves it is possible to change over when the weather is poor.

A vacuum tube heater will work for most of the year even in cold weather

Yes they can get very hot in the summer ours is in the 90s every day even with 4 people showering, infact it is imposible for us to use all of the hot water !!

you can fit a thermostatic mixing valve to mix cold with the hot to reduce the temperature.

Also another good trick is to cover part of the collector to recduce the out put in the summer

Cheers Tony

I have had a solar panel for water heating for just over ten years.

The type I have stops heating when the water reaches 78º C.

There are two of us in the apartment and even when we had a cloudy days there is enough water. Only when it cloudy / raining for a couple of days do I switch on the emersion heater which is the storage tank in the panel.

I have it wired up so I can see when the heather is consuming power, ( red light is on and its by my bed) so can remember to turn it off when not needed,  for maximum savings.

 Hi John,

I am glad to hear your system has given you good service for 10 years , I bet you have saved a fortune in fuel .

I find it strange how little solar power is used here, when we have sun nearly every day.

But I am sure that people will start turning to alternative energy as , the power companys keep pushing up the prices and tax.

Regards Tony cssolar
